When Your Hair Do Goes Wrong

Ask a Question
When Your Hair Do Goes Wrong

What the law says about salon services

When you pay for a haircut, colour or treatment, you enter into a contract with the salon. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, any service you pay for must be carried out with reasonable care and skill. The service should also match any information the salon gave you about what to expect.

This does not mean you can demand a refund simply because you changed your mind about a style. But if the hairdresser made a clear mistake, failed to follow your instructions, or caused damage to your hair, you have grounds to complain and seek a remedy.

The salon may offer to fix the problem at no extra cost. If that is not possible or you no longer trust them to put it right, you can ask for a partial or full refund depending on how far the result fell short of what was agreed. What counts as reasonable will depend on the specific circumstances.

Be aware that there are time limits for bringing claims. For breach of contract, you generally have six years from the date of the service, though raising concerns promptly will always strengthen your position.

Patch tests and allergic reactions

Chemical treatments such as hair dye can cause allergic reactions in some people. These reactions range from mild irritation to severe swelling. In very rare cases, anaphylaxis can occur, though this is uncommon with hair dye. This is why reputable salons will ask you to have a patch test before applying colour, especially if you are a new client or trying a different product.

A patch test involves applying a small amount of the dye to your skin, usually behind the ear or on the inner elbow, and waiting 48 hours to see if a reaction develops. It may feel like an inconvenience, but it exists to protect you.

If a salon skips the patch test and you suffer an allergic reaction, you may be able to claim compensation. To succeed, you would typically need to show that the salon was negligent or breached its duty of care, for example by failing to inform you about the need for a test or not obtaining your consent. The strength of any claim will also depend on the severity of the reaction. A minor rash is different from a reaction that requires hospital treatment.

Keep records if something goes wrong. Take photographs of any visible damage or reaction, keep receipts, and write down what was discussed with the stylist. Note the dates and details of any phone calls or conversations. This evidence will be useful if you need to take the matter further.

Your situation may be slightly different. ask a question below ↓ and our editorial team will reply with our advice.

How to complain effectively

If you are unhappy with the result, raise it with the salon as soon as you can. Many problems are easier to resolve when addressed quickly, and waiting weeks before complaining can weaken your position.

Start by speaking to the stylist or salon manager. Explain calmly what has gone wrong and what resolution you are seeking. Some salons will offer to correct the issue or provide a discount, though others may be less willing to cooperate. Give them a reasonable chance to put things right before escalating.

If speaking in person does not resolve things, put your complaint in writing. A letter or email creates a record and makes it clear you are treating the matter seriously. Include the date of your appointment, what service you asked for and what you received, any evidence such as photographs or receipts, and what outcome you are seeking.

Give the salon a reasonable deadline to respond, typically 14 days. If they refuse to engage or you cannot agree on a solution, you have further options.

Taking the matter further

If the salon will not resolve your complaint, you can contact Citizens Advice for guidance on your next steps. They can help you understand whether your case is strong enough to pursue and what options are available.

It is worth asking whether the salon has professional indemnity insurance. Many salons carry this cover, and valid claims can sometimes be resolved through their insurer without needing court involvement.

For lower value disputes, the small claims court is often the most practical route. In England and Wales, you can make a claim online through the Money Claims Online service. The process is designed to be accessible without needing a solicitor, though you will need to pay a fee to start a claim. Fee amounts typically depend on how much you are claiming, and current rates are listed on GOV.UK.

If the salon is a member of a trade body such as the National Hair and Beauty Federation, you may also be able to use their complaints procedure. Trade bodies sometimes offer mediation services that can help both sides reach an agreement without going to court.

For more serious injuries caused by negligence, such as chemical burns or a severe allergic reaction, it may be worth seeking legal advice about a personal injury claim. Many solicitors offer a free initial consultation to assess whether you have a case.

While an unsatisfactory service can be frustrating, being informed about your rights allows you to seek appropriate redress.

@Tilly Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 the service must be carried out with reasonable care and skill, so you're right to pursue this. Since your card issuer has refused, put in a Section 75 claim in writing (credit card only, over £100) and escalate to the Financial Ombudsman if they still say no. Also send the salon a formal letter before action giving 14 days to refund, then take it to the small claims court via MoneyClaim Online. Keep photos and all messages as evidence.

Hi I have loss on the front of head .whish find very embarrassing. I want to this hair stylist who could do hair intergration. Which needs net on your which hair is pulled through them beaded tokeep it surcure .then she attaches the wefts around mt head being showed onto the mesh which was plastic ..that hair was what I 1b in colour off black .then she attached my topper .which I said that is the wrong colour.she was saying no its what you choose.it wasn't it very lighter than the weft already to attached to my hair .at this point I wasn't happy at all.. so she finished it look ok .however it was the first time to intergration. Over ears was hurting the front of head was one straight line across my forehead. I phoned her and for a appointment. She was very abusive over the phone .all said have you finished i need to see you .after her abusive manner I got appointment. When I went to shop I sat down she started to be abusive .then said ill give half my money back i yes .then she changed it .she did say I can see where's its gone wrong so let try and put it right. Then I asked it to be a bit shorter .then wanted to dye it all .I said it should been right colour as I wash it it gets lighter. ConsumerRightsExpert Editor 24/05/2026 at 9:17 am
@Kay That sounds awful and you've a strong case under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, as the service wasn't carried out with reasonable care and skill. Put it all in writing to her (email or text), state you want a full refund plus the cost of putting it right elsewhere, and give her 14 days. Skipping the skin test alone is a serious breach of insurer and industry guidelines. If she ignores you, do a chargeback with your bank if you paid by card, or start a small claims action via Money Claim Online.

I had a mobile hairdresser come out to colour my hair and fit nano extensions. However, she didn’t colour match me for the Extentions prior to application neither did skin test me. After 8 hours in the chair (although she said would only be 4) I was in such a hurry to get home I barely noticed anything wrong as she’d curled it. When I got home I platted it like she advised for bed. The next day I woke up brushed it with a tangle tweezer brush as advised. The hair looked, smelt and felt like dolls hair. I tried to tie it up to keep it hidden as I had to go out. I couldn’t as the nanos were so high and close to my face could see them all. I contacted her and told her, and also complained about the colour of the hair was too yellow and didn’t match my own colour. She had bleached my hair and done my roots as a block and not highlights which, I didn’t want. My hair is too yellowy/ blonde. She said she would take the yellow ones out and replace with blonde ones. However, I had to travel to her. This being over an hour journey and over the dartford toll I refused, to do this. I’ve messaged her photos since of the poor quality hair and explained everything I’m not happy with she took £445 from me and I’m left with awful awful hair. She admitted she’d used 250 degree heat on them yet advised me to only used 180. So if they can only take 180 why did she use 250? I’m getting no response. Help ? What do I do? I cannot go out? I cannot do anything with this mess of a awful hair style.

I had a perm yesterday.i asked and showed the stylist what I wanted. a quite tight spiral perm.its far from a spiral perm and the roots and ends are straight. She cut quite a lot off my hair too .ive spoke to the stylist and she says she won't redo my hair but only curl the bits that are straight.really don't know what to do

Last June I had my hairdresser to put a straightening treatment on my hair which she advised me to have when she did a last straightening treatment last March. To my horror the chemical treatment has burnt my hair to the extent that I’ve had to have about 14 inches cut off . My hair looked like a scouring pad, it has devastated me and made me poorly . I’ve been in touch with my solicitor and she’s denying what she has done , yet I’ve got all the photographic evidence and the text messages which shows her admitting it. I can’t let her get away with what she’s done so where do I go from here .

Hi Kim, did your friend have a hair mesh/interlace system?
CassyG 05/04/2021 at 11:57 am
I have coloured my own hair very successfully over the years. When it is due to be coloured, the last few times I have noticed that it is coming through a white silver colour, so I decided to die my blonde hair silver to match the new colour coming through, ultimately hoping not to have to colour it anymore. I used an Olia silver hair colour, did the patch test 48 hrs before and checked the colour on a small piece of my hair cut from the back. The colour looked fine. I went ahead and coloured it, closely following instructions. When I washed it off, to my horror my fresh growth of hair at the roots was purple. The lengths were a sludgy grey I washed it several times but it was still purple. I phoned Olia and they were less than helpful, telling me to buy some clarifying shampoo. I visited 9 chemists before managing to find some. I tried this several times and it has barely made any difference. Olia have offered to reimburse me £6.99 for the cost of the product which I think is insufficient. I believe they should add a warning note to their packaging to advise that this could happen to silver hair.
I was wondering what my rights are under these circumstances and who else I could complain to.

Hi

I've been wearing the same colour beauty works extensions for 5 years (bronde balayage). They have recently been discontinued.

My hairdresser recommended a similar colour (brondm'bre) and said she would only have to make my roots slightly darker

I ordered the hair myself brought them to the hairdressers, she died it and took the extensions out the packaging and cut them (width ways to fit my head, she didn't take anything off the length). When she held up the extensions to my head, they didn't look anything like the same colour.

When we compared the colour to the sample ring she had matched them to, the extensions were a lot lighter. My hair is warm and they had lots of ashy blonde running through it.

When I rang beauty works, they are saying that they're non returnable as they've been taken out the packaging and using the excuse that their sample ring has been updated and my hairdresser has an old one.

Who's fault is this and how do i get my money back? I ordered the hair myself so I can't exactly ask the hairdresser for a refund?

Thanks

My friends just had a weave done to cover her alopecia. The weave looks like a wig rather than natural hair (expected natural looking hair). This cost her £1800.00. Is there anything she can do to get the money out? She wants the weave removing ASAP.

She also said that she wants to be able to scrape her hair back into a ponytail. She can't do this as you can see the netting.

Thanks for you help.

So I just got my hair done at a salon after my sister tried to do a balayage. My sister colored maybe, if not less than 3 inches of my long hair. So I go into the salon, I ask for subtle, DARK highlights that go about 3/4 of the way up, to tone down the straight across light brown my sister previously did. I showed the lady what I wanted, she even referenced where she would stop the so called “highlights”. I come out, with full blown BLONDE highlights, all the way up to the root. The mirror I looked in was in a poorly lit room, so I could barely see how light it was. I went outside, I don’t have mirrors in my truck, so I’m looking through my phone camera, still, can barely see it. So I go eat, and go home, finally see my hair in an actual mirror, I don’t like it, so I call and tell the lady what’s going on. She claims she didn’t reference where she was going to stop the highlights, that highlights go up to the root. when she said to my face where she was going to stop. I know this is miscommunication on both parts, but I’d really just like at least half my money back. I paid $170 for this, and it’s really upsetting.

I went to a salon in Chingford that sounds like ‘misha n pearls’ ! after never having been to a hair dressers. I paid a fortune for permanent hair colour and highlights. The hair colour has not held and no one can see any highlights. It’s been weeks and the dye still comes out in the shower, on the towels, on my clothes. It’s terrible... I don’t know if this is normal but either way I was not expecting that and I wasn’t told.

Hi,

I've had a hair extension fitting last night, i paid for 22" extra thickness extensions, when fitting them I had 50g bundles in my hand and I was passing the person doing my hair a strand at a time, she only fitted 2 bundles which makes me believe she only fitted 100g in my hair, when "extra thickness" should be 150g-175g. She didn't offer to style my hair, so when I got home and styled it myself I realized straight away the difference in this set compared to my last set. (My last set of extensions, by a different person were a lot longer and thicker baring in mind I had asked and paid for exactly the same length and thickness) After styling it, i measured the strands and they're only 20". I've messaged the person who fitted them for me to check the packaging for the length, and the amount shes put in and also sent her the comparison photos I've got. Obviously, I just want what I've paid for, so don't want to go down this route unless I have to, but do I have any leg to stand on when it comes to the legal route?

Thanks in advance

I've had my hair coloured numerous times but last week was with a new product, no patch test done. My hair should have looked pale platinum but ended up a very brassy colour. My stylist asked me to come back the following day to redo it, still some brassiness there. I was charged £70, really not happy and contacted her and she has offered to put a lighter colour all over and charge me £25 should I be paying and should I have paid in the first place

This was my 3rd visit to the same hair salon with the same stylist for a colour, cut and blow dry. I know my colour and told the hairdresser my colour was Wella Professionals dark brown with ash as this is very close to my natural hair colour. I was happy with the cut and blow dry yet next day noticed in the daylight my hair is medium brown and looks very red. It looks as though she has coloured it medium brown and its not as dark as I expected. I don't know what to do as do not want to offend my hairdresser as mistakes can happen but if I have been very specific with my brand and colour where do I stand as this is definitely not dark brown and know it will only get lighter as and when I wash it. Opinion appreciated.

I had my hair cut and coloured last week, I was charged full price. When I looked at her facebook page she was offering 20% discount From October ( I had it done in October) till December which she didnt apply at the time. When I asked her about it she said she had forgotten about the discount and will knock it off my next service. I asked if she would pay me £13 she forgot to knock off the full price ( how do you forget when you run a business!!! ) as I wont be having another service, she said she cant do this and wont pay me. Is this right, I cant see the problem with it!

Hi I had extensions put in 4 weeks ago - I wasn’t given a choice of colour or length - she matched and ordered with 5 minutes. I had to pay my £240 straight away.
When applying she layered 3 lengths of extensions in One row and making too heavy. The application was lose I had to go back a week later and ask to move them.
They were applied tighter but too tight in places and caused test in and ripped my hair out in places and cause red raw lumps and obviously hair loss.
She blamed it on me not being used to the method or not washing shampoo out properly?! When I said the second time it wasn’t ok.

I’ve had to reach out to a more expert hair extensionsist and have them taken out and re fitted (3 rows of one layer and leaving two out!!) and in correct manner.
The colour match isn’t correct and I’m left with sore scalp and bald spots and £250 down the drain plus £60 to re fit? Can I claim my money back?

I am still suffering problems due to a couple of cuts in local salons a year ago, and a lack of trust in Hairdressers, finding a genuine caring and real good Hairdresser in south West London is virtually impossible, I told the Salon owner in question I went to her Salon for help because the last cut I had locally was bad, but her staff members work was worse actually, and got threatened she would tell the police because I was putting her business at risk, so telling the truth about her salon in the online review will be erased, I paid £75 for each of those haircuts from hell, no negative only positive is acceptable, my situation and felling some did not matter, I am not a celeb, she is only interested if you are, that is the truth.

I went to a hairdressers for a balayage. They put bleach foils head for 5 hours. My hair was like chewing gum i lost 6 inches off the back and 8 from the front. I approached the salon and they said they would fix the front of my hair with extensions but i would have to pay for hair. I don't see why i have to pay anymore money to fixed what they ruined. My hair was in perfect condition and now i can't even brush my hair. Could i have some advice please.

I brought in a photo of the cut and color I wanted. It was a dark brown. She looked at the photo and after she washed out the color- my hsir was red with blond tips. She said she did an hombre and thought this color would look good. She wasn't able to fix it then because her flight to Jamaica was leaving in a few hours. She said I could come bsck in 2 weeks and she would redo and I could pay then. However this color is horrible. I am embarked to go to work or in public and have noticed my scalp looks like there was also hair loss. What do I do? Do I pay her to fix it? . Do I tell her out of the 4 times I went there only 1 time she did what I wanted and request that they pay for me to go to a salon that has never failed me. (I only went to this girl because it as about $100 less).
Thank you!!

Get someone else (another hairdresser) to give you an independent viewpoint to take back to the salon. Follow the advice in the article above.
Randa86 12/08/2018 at 5:28 pm
I had a perm yesterday, I had been for a consultation a few days prior and showed a picture of what I wanted (loose, beach waves) it’s my first perm so I don’t know the procedure. The stylist (who owns the salon) gave me poor service and was very distant. The end result wasn’t what I wanted but I thought I’d give it few days as I was told it would drop. I asked the stylist the procedure and what to do/and not to do. She said I could wash it the next day, never brush it and use a comb. I washed it today and it’s completely changed. It’s very uneven, some bits are even straight. I have now read that you are not supposed to wash it or get it wet for at least 3-5 days. It was raining when I left the salon and she didn’t say anything so it got wet straight away. I really don’t want to go back there but I’m £90 out of pocket and left with horrendous hair. What shall I do. I’m nervous about approaching them but I know they are in the wrong.

Hi

I posted previously. What do I do if the hairdresser in question that caused the damage are refusing responsibility. I have had to visit my usual hairdressers who have written an email in confirmation of their finding. But I have had to have a considerable amount of hair cut out and off and still not sorted. I have full photo evidence and the hair as proof. As a consumer I have paid for a service and they have damaged my hair extensively not just the extra cost to try to correct but the huge distress this has caused ?
ConsumerRightsExpert Editor 22/06/2018 at 2:33 pm
Get a second opinion then if necessary claim for financial loss i.e the cost of getting your hair fixed by another salon. Tell the new stylist what happened, and ask them to give you their comments - in writing if possible. Write to the original hairdresser with a copy of the receipt and any comments, and give them 14 days to reimburse you.

Hi. I wanted some hair extensions in and found a girl local advertised on Facebook as a specialist in hair extensions. She had some photos and reviews so looked like a good option. Her Facebook page is her business page. I wanted them ombré. Dark on top blonde on ends. She fitted them last night and I could tell something was wrong when she rushed out and made excuses that it would fluff out after washing. I paid £250 on credit card. When having a close look in the mirror upstairs they look horrendous. You can see my hair underneath and it’s blatently obviously they are extensions at the back especially. Which I didn’t see before she left. They are also not ombré but blonde and dark mixed together. I messaged her straight away after she left to say I was disappointed and explained why and that I would like them out and a refund. She’s ignored me. I called credit card company to try stop payment but they couldn’t and said to let payment go through and give her opportunity to make things right. Next day still no reply so I messaged again. She has seen the messages as it tells you when read. But she’s ignoring me. What do I do now? Do I go through credit card company to claim money back? Through trading standard? Small claims? I’m absolutely gutted and I’m also going to have to pay someone to remove them seems as she’s ignoring me

I had Remy extensions yesterday and when I got home my daughter said they looked nice but she could see the glue! To my horror, when I inspected them and saught advice from a high end hairdresser in town, I was told that there was far far too much glue . I spoke with the lady who done them and she insisted that was how she had always done them and they were fine, but did agree to remove them in a week!!! I have pictures and will be asking for a refund

I have a keratin treatment done on my hair 2 weeks ago and my hair has gone longer me straw! Went to hairdressers and they said that adding more keratin could damage it even more. They put a conditioning treatment on it and was told would last for 2 weeks. Asked them for complementary hair products to take home with me as they had damaged my hair!! They said no!!! They’d never had a problem with keratin before. At the end of the day. They have turned my blonde healthy hair into straw. Please advise
ConsumerRightsExpert Editor 25/04/2018 at 11:22 am
If you're not satisfied with the service and the hairdresser is refusing to communicate with you, you may have to take further action via the courts. Send a letter to the salon address advising them of your issues and that they have not yet responded. Inform that that you are going to report the matter to Trading Standards and will seek to recover costs of repairing/redoing the hairstyle at another salon via the small claims court.

Hi, I booked someone from Instagram to have balayage done, he owns a salon in central London. When I got to my appointment, I was met with his junior trainee colleague that was ‘assisting’ him but actually ended up doing the whole job. I refused to pay the price they quoted as I had booked with the stylist himself and not a junior trainee stylist, but they still charged me the same amount which was £350!! When I came home and had a proper look at my hair I noticed the colour was faded in some parts of my hair and was streaky at the back of my head which is not balayage, it’s actually highlights. I texted him straight away to ask if I could come in and have it fixed but he ignored my texts, I called and he ignored my calls also. It’s been a week and I cannot get through to him. This has left me out of pocket and have lost all my confidence. What are my rights please?

I started having my hair dyed in October of last year, and was never offered a patch test. I had a horrible reaction to the toner and was in immense pain the whole time it was on, which only dulled when it was removed but my scalp was incredibly sensitive. For weeks after I had scabs all over my scalp, it felt like I was wearing a helmet. However once it healed I didn’t think much of it, I didn’t realise you could get that reaction from being allergic and thought (since it was my first time) that it was normal or my scalp just wasn’t used to the treatment. The next time I had my hair touched up was when I visited home and was at another salon, and was relieved to find I suffered no pain and thought the initial reaction I had must have been due to it being my first time. So I didn’t expect to experience it again when I went back to the first salon, and I was gravely mistaken. I once again felt as though my head had been plunged into fire, was squirming and trying to breathe through the pain while two other employees in the salon wafted me with books to help with the pain. I tell this story to my friend, confused as to why I would only have that reaction at that salon and find that it is possible to be allergic to different toners and that I should have been offered a patch test to make sure it was safe for me to use. Now trying to find out where is best and safest to go, and always getting a patch test done before committing to treatment. Don’t make the same mistake as I did, £180 is a lot of money to pay for torture
ConsumerRightsExpert Editor 06/03/2018 at 12:00 pm
If the extensions are not as described (e.g not the grade she said they were ) then you should ask the original hairdresser for verification of this.If she concedes that this is the case, then she should replace or refund you. If she refuses, you will need to consider the small claims court. Note, Trading Standards cannot pursue a case (for refund etc) on your behalf.

Hi, just after Christmas I had hair extensions fitted, she didn’t give me a consultation just colour matched my hair by me sending her photos to go off (this was her idea not mine), this was the first time I’ve ever had them so didn’t know any different. I asked and paid for 22 inch, as she was fitting the hair she said that my natural hair is longer than she thought, as she was fitting them I thought it isn’t any longer than my natural hair (she knew I wanted them for extra length not thickness), when I got home I measured them and they were only just about 19 inch so sent her a message because I was obviously not happy. Her response was she was sorry but it was because she had cut them. She agreed she would replace the bottom row (I had 2 lines of extensions), with the longer length, when I got home again I realised that it looked far too thin only having the bottom row at a longer length, so I asked her to also replace the top row. But for this I had to pay extra, I wasn’t happy but I wanted them right. I have just been to another hairdresser for them re tightening, and she has told me they are a mess and need completely re fitting (that explains why they have been so uncomfortable), and also I have paid for a certain grade of hair, and that what she has used Is definitely not that grade of hair (she knows because she uses the brand/grade that I asked for). I was just wondering if you can advise me on where I stand, I want to have my money back so I can pay another extensionist to do it with the hair I’ve paid for. Is it something I can report to trading standards if she doesn’t agree to give me a full refund? This woman is also wanting to set up her own training academy which is very worrying! Your help would be really appreciated, I’ve saved up for this hair to have done for my wedding, have paid £400 and it’s just not right.

The salon has offered a refund, if you paid in cash, they will have to refund in cash so you may need to go into the salon to get it. If you want to claim compensation you should get an expert (other professional colourist) to take a look at your hair and produce a short report for you, then take to the small claims court.

I had my hair coloured at a salon. Previously I have coloured my hair myself and had took 2 years to grow it one length.
She cut a small piece from under my hair to do a colour test as I was going darker.
Upon having my hair done she wove blonde through the top... which she hasn't tested on my hair.... and dark underneath and at the roots.
She advised me to not wash it for 3 days to let the colour settle.
After 1st washing it I noticed I had very short.. 4" long... bits of hair around the top on the blonde.... it had broken off!... this was all around the top on the blonde bits..
I couldn't contact the salon owner as she was away for 2 weeks. I have contacted her and she has said she will refund me after I asked her. But I don't feel this is enough. Now 4 weeks on... my hair is all broken around the top... the colour had gone copper not brown and my hair is in dreadful condition. I'm devastated to say the least.. needless to say I've messaged her about the refund as I need it to go elsewhere to sort my hair out nut she's not replied despite me knowing she's read it as it's on messenger.
What are my rights and can I also claim for the way this has made me feel... also my hair is still breaking off.
Thank you

Was this at a salon or by someone doing it privately?

Please see the last section in the above article which explains what to do if your hairdresser is uncooperative following your complaint.

I have very long hair plus the roots look orange, I told the hairdresser she said it's nothing it will be from styling it. I said I don't style it. My mum said my hair is ruined I can't believe how bad it is what can I do

We really can't comment/advise on individual cases like this. The Facebook post didn't specify a newly qualified stylist would do the colouring, but nor did it specify an experienced colourist would do it. Some colours do fade and require toning, especially the red shades but we can't really give advice on whether someone should know this beforehand on not - a good stylist however will usually make these things clear if you've not had a colour done before. You haven't mentioned whether you have given the salon the opportunity to rectify the colour in the few days after the appointment when you clearly weren't happy with the colour. It's unlikely the salon will refund you the entire amount if it's a misunderstanding over the particular shade.

(Continued from previous comment below)

...on them which is irrelevant as I was showing them as a reference to what colour I wanted my hair. The pictures of my hair were dismissed on the grounds that I hadn’t straightened my hair like in the pictures shown, and they think my hair is red ... it’s not, it’s an orange red (ginger/copper) and not the deep red I asked for.

So for these reasons I was refused a refund and the offer to come back and have toner put in my hair again was also withdrawn.

My question is, am I eligible for a refund and if so, how do I get a £50 refund in a way that won’t cost too much?

I went to the Hairdressers (~45 miles away, not a convenient or cheap commute) after seeing an ad on their Facebook page which I thought was an offer they had on for Christmas. I booked an appointment for a colour treatment which was on offer.

I went in and had my consultation in which I wasn’t made aware that the person doing my hair was a trainee/newly qualified (not on the Facebook post either), I wasn’t told that what I wanted wasn’t achievable, nor was I told that it would fade and not last very long, and I wasn’t informed of the aftercare. I showed her pictures of what I wanted and she went straight into working on my hair.

Straight after the consultation, the hairdresser started working on my hair and when it was done it was far from what I had asked for (I asked for a deep red, at this point I was a light copper). She blowdried it and I could see the true colour which was now lighter and I made a comment about it and she started putting more toner in and trying to fix the colour issue. Once again, after it was blow dried it was slightly closer to what I wanted (a slight red tone now) but nowhere near what I asked for.

She straightened it, then told me about after care and that I’d have to top it up with a toner at home every so often because it would fade (why wasn’t I told this during the consultation? I wouldn’t have gone through with it if I had known). We paid and left to go to a dinner which we had booked and were going to be late for due to the extra toning.

When I washed my hair a few days later all the toner faded and my hair was left a copper/ginger colour, not even close to deep red.

We then contacted the salon via text and explained the problem asking how to resolve the issue. We then sent pictures of what we asked for and what we received (which was a poor attempt at getting close to the pictures we had shown the stylist).

From start to end there were constant excuses and the tone changed completely when I asked for a refund. I was accused of having a treatment worth £160 which I paid £50 for because the stylist had to tone, wash, and blow dry twice, and I was accused of all this having to be done just because I didn’t like the colour I had chosen and not because it wasn’t the colour I asked for or because the stylist couldn’t do a fair job.

We then received a horrible (very defensive and hostile) phone call which I could tell wasn't made with the intention of sorting things out, it was made to excuse and justify their poor service. During the call I was accused of not liking the colour, getting £160 worth of treatment for £50, and not contacting them soon enough (6 days after the treatment) as I could’ve ‘tampered’ with my hair within those 6 days according to them. I was also told it’s my fault because I left the salon without being satisfied but I had to leave to attend a pre-organised dinner.

I was also told that the pictures I showed them of what I wanted could’ve been edited or had filters

You should really have said something when she started cutting it the second time. You could try and claim some kind of refund but it sounds more like a misunderstanding than anything. Is it a really bad cut or do you just not like it?

Hi,

I went to a salon to get my hair bleached a few months back. The bleaching went fine, but the hairdresser told me I would need the ends cutting off, even though I told her I didn't want it cut. She cut the ends off, and it looked fine when I left.

I had to go back to the salon a second time a week later for another bleach, as I was getting rid of my dark brown hair. This time, the hairdresser did the bleach, which was fine, and then she started cutting at my hair again, even though she never asked if I would like it cut, she just started doing it.

It wasn't until I left the salon and got home that I realized what a state my hair had been left in.

Before I first went to the salon, I had hair going down my back, the first time she cut it, it was okay, it was still quite long, now I am left with hair that is about 10cm long at the top, and above shoulder length at the bottom, and there are all different lengths in my hair, it's truly awful.

It's really getting me down now, everyday I look in the mirror and hate my hair, I feel it would be better if I cut it all off and started again. I hate the way I look now, and it's starting to make me feel depressed.

I don't know what to do anymore, it's now growing, my hair is wrecked.

Is there anything I could do?
ConsumerRightsExpert Editor 01/12/2017 at 12:26 pm
Firstly write to the hairdresser, tell them what's happened and say you would like compensation to cover the cost of (a) the original hair appointment (b) prescription charges (c) missed work (d) inconvenice/pain etc. See what they offer and whether you're happy with it. If they refuse or make an offer you're not happy with, consider mediation, seeking advice from a solicitor or making a claim through the small claims court.

Hi I had my hair dyed in a salon near me and the stylist is someone I know. I showed her the colour I wanted and spoke to her about it. My hair didn’t look anything like the picture. That evening my scalp became very itchy. I’ve The next couple of days I had severe headaches, felt un well and blisters started forming on my scalp and hair line. Then on my neck and ears this angry redness was weaping. I ended up going to my walk in centre and was seen straight away. I was advised to take piriton regularly and antihistamine cream. I did this for a few days and had to go back to the doctors who prescribed me some ointment and more tablets and advised to use t-gel sensitive to wash my hair with. The salon has shown no interest in my problems and as well as paying for my hair and then the cost of my prescriptions etc and time off of work as the tablets make me drowsy. Where do I stand and what are my rights? My doctor told me I am entitled to compensation is this true and how do I go about it even though I know the hairdresser?
Many thanks

Hi,
I have naturally dark hair. I wanted to have a silver grey (granny) look. I went for a hair test and was told they could achieve what I wanted. They said it would have to be done in stages at £120 a go. after the third visit the hair started to turn green. I went back in to complain 2 days later. They acknowledged something was wrong and would consult their head colourist. I just received a call to say that it is not possible to achieve my desired hair colour and that they will redye my hair to its original colour. I complained that it wasnt good enough. Their head of the salon has called back to say that they will refund only £120 and that I should get my hair recoloured somewhere else. I have spent over £350 with the salon to get green hair. I had to take days off work and incur travel expenses. What are my rights to get my money back
Mils 05/09/2017 at 9:27 am
I paid £500 for a weave which I was told would be discrete and good quality. I had it installed on the provisions that I would definitely be able to tie my hair up with it. I have had it for 5 days and already hairs are sticking out the sides of the tapes and I cannot tie my hair up. Two people have pointed out the tracks to me already.

Am I entitled to a refund?

Thanks for your time.

So I got my hair done for my birthday we're stationed in Fayetteville, NC right now. I thought I finally found someone to do great for me but I feel like I lost my money and left empty handed. So I got my hair done on Friday evening 7th a lace wig install that was made by the stylist(she had a lot of wigs she makes them) so the one I picked she said was Cambodian body wave 24-26 inch. She said the price was $680. So to have it installed which just sewed in round the head mostly the back and she placed a band in the back price was $120 for install. Her assistant braided my hair down for $25. So in total I paid $825 for this service and wig. Saturday I went back to lay the lace on the sides down because she forgot but told me I could do it at home. She did it then I purchased items for home use to care for it. So Tuesday and Wednesday night at work I'm noticing I'm having a lot of Pain, itching, and Bad Burning to my head. So Wednesday I text and booked to have the wig removed (since she told me it could be worn without sew) I thought it was too tight. I endured through Thursday night miserable it was painful and burning. Friday I went in told her what was going on and got it removed I was charged $15 for that so now total $840. She was busy(i booked) but put the wig on my head lace standing up across my head and put two Bobby pins on each side. The assistant was saying my scalp was red and the braid in the back had to be removed it was so painful. So she ended up telling me she used a piece of synthetic hair in the back and I probably had a reaction because she saw a lot of redness. After the stylist put the wig on I asked her what to do about my head she told me "Oh you were serious" she told me to put peroxide and tea tree oil and I hate you couldn't wear the install you paid for I'll discount your next wig purchase. So on the way home i had to remove the wig it was so painful, irritated, and burning to the back i had an appointment somewhere else so I had to wear my braids that were left in. I told the stylist I needed to talk with her was she still at the salon she called me later I told her what did I need to do because I'm in pain, burning, it was even painful to move my neck. Everything I put back there it would burn even more i was so miserable still am I can't do anything to the back of my head. She told me she couldn't do a refund but could give me a shampoo and style and see if anyone wanted to buy the wig but she assured me it wasn't her wig that it had to have been the piece of hair that was used. That just doesn't seem right at all. Now I'm thinking I don't even want a shampoo or nothing else from there because I'm afraid something else may happen even worse than now because in 25 years of getting my hair done this has NEVER happened I honestly just want my money back. Pain was inflicted on me by them and I PAID for it and get nothing back. I would never try to be rude or anything but that just doesn't make sense. W

My son had his hair dyed and it is absolutely nothing like the colour he asked for, he suffers from social anxiety and was afraid to tell them at the time he didn't like it so I went in later the same day, they offered to put it right however he is too afraid to go back there, what else can we do? It cost £ 100 his hair Haa turned bright blue and pink on top (parotid colours), he had shown them a picture of dark lavender blue/dark silver which was nothing like what he ended up with

I went to the salon today showed my stylist some pics on my phone as I'd decided to go a cooler blonde with highlights and some darker brown to break it up a little. She put the foils in, left me for half hour and etc etc as she blow dried my hair I thought it looked dark but stuck with it until she finished, I instantly said it was very dark and that I hated it, and How much older it made me look! I said it looked like a wierd grey colour! I had been blonde before she had done this and it looks like it isn't blonde at all now. Anyway she looked in the book and is fitting me in to put some bleach foils in 2 days time. I'm really hoping she doesn't try to charge me. I have re looked at the picture I had initially showed her and my hair colour is nothing like it! I've been a regular client there for 2 years so I am hoping this is rectified free of charge. I will show her the picture again when I go and I will point out that there is no resemblance, I will refuse to pay if asked because I paid £93 for this terrible colour!!! I feel so horrible and awkward but she has let me down on this occasion badly. I look awful and won't be happy until I am sorted.

I wanted hair extensions, I found her ad on craigslist, I met with her told her that I wanted 18 " wavy blond hair,, she said not a problem, came back the next day, and the hair she had was not wavy, it was straight, I told her that i asked for wavy hair, she said whatever style i put in it while its wet, will hold that style, I trusted her,, BIG MISTAKE!, The hair she sewed in, was frizzy and I couldn't work with it at all, I contacted her, and she saw the way it looked, & said Oh, that must be a Bad Batch of hair,,& told me to come back the next day,, so now its over 2 weeks, since i had thaT SERVICE DONE,,, SHE WAITED TIL IT WAS A HALF HOUR TIL i GOT THERE & SHE CANCELED,, SHE SAID SHE WAS GOING TO ORDER THE HAIR,, SHE THEN CANCELED AGAIN, i TOOK THE EXTENSIONS OUT MYSELF, & CALLED HER & SAID I WOULD LIKE MY MONEY BACK, SHE SAID NO, BECAUSE SHE CANT RE USE THE HAIR
ConsumerRightsExpert Editor 19/05/2017 at 9:21 am
Maybe if your hair is unable to take certain types/colours of dye, the hairdresser had no choice but to do what she did? You must give the hairdresser a chance to rectify the problem (you should have complained straight away really). If they refuse or it doesn't work then you can go to an alternative salon and claim back the cost.

I went to a hair salon to get my hair dyed, had the picture of what I wanted and showed to the hair dresser and showed her what I didn't want. My hair had already been dyed vintage red box dye from the store but hadn't been dyed in a month. The Color I wanted was red with caramel highlights. SHE SAID SHE COULD DO THIS and said no worries. after sitting with foil in my hair for over an hour, she checked under the foil and it wasn't pulling past a light pink. So we left for a little longer but it still wasn't pulling. She said she didn't think my hair would have been that hard to pull. So she said we would wash that out and see what we could do. Ended up just putting lighter red highlights. After the next few day's I was getting more upset cause I didn't get what I was wanting and she said she could do it. If I would have known she couldn't (as I told her later) I would have went with something else or nothing at all. It's been about two weeks now and after two washes the light red highlights are slowly getting the pink look back. (not to mention she put the light red highlights in while my hair was still wet). What can I do? I contacted her and she said she was sorry I didn't like it but she's afraid if she bleaches it, because she had already used some bleach in with the caramel, that my hair will burn and I will be even more unhappy. What do I do though? She said she could do it but didn't deliver.

I had black hair and got it done in a hair dressers as everyone was recommending it to me I wanted to go brown with blonde through it I have had 7 sessions and it cost me €610 , I done the 7 go last week and my hair had turned out awful it had 3 colours in it the top is yellow, then white and the bottom are ginger I'm not one not one bit happy with it and when I rang to tell her she told me it is what I asked for , I was at a different hair dressers this morning and she told me that my hair is so damaged I can't put any products into !! I didn't leave the house in a week today was my first time out and I've to go back to school Monday which I doubt I will !! Can anyone tell me how would I go about this please
ConsumerRightsExpert Editor 27/03/2017 at 2:37 pm
If the salon will not give you a refund, you feel that the job was not satisfactory and you don't think they have done enough to attempt to repair the damage, you should pursue it via the small claims court.

Ok so I went to a salon to get ombré done to my hair, showed the lady what I wanted done but when she done it it wasn't the colour I wanted but she curled it and it looked ok so I went home washed it the next day and when I straightened it it was hideous, there was a huge line through my hair so I went back and the same lady said she'd fix it but instead she put more bleach on my hair and it didn't really do much it just looked brighter on the ends, again she curled it so I couldn't see what it really looked like, anyway the next day I straightened it again and it looked even worse than the first time, so I went back and see the manager and she could see how bad it was so she said she would fix it, so she put another colour through my hair to fix it but still this was the 3rd time I had stuff put in my hair and it still looked awful and patchy, so she said to go back again which this was be the 4th time so I did and it looked no different, she was messy with my hair, put kitchen roll in it instead of foils and when I said I still wasn't happy she got the ump and said I'm done with your hair and walked off, I paid a lot of money to get my hair done for it to be ruined and now I've come up in loads of spots through my head, I want to take it further as they wouldn't give me my money back, can you please help me or tell me who I can go to to take it further?

Please can you help me I had a new set of hair extensions put in which cost me £300 within less than two weeks I've lost at least 10 strands of hair I contacted my hairdresser and she said she would charge me for putting them back in which I felt was totally wrong when they were done less two weeks.(I didn't go back) Then I contacted later to ask her when my maintenance appointment was booked in as I forgot to write it down and she told me she didn't want to do my hair any more so I've paid £300 For nothing as there is no one else round where I live that does these sort of extensions. Can she do this I think she should give me my money back if she's not prepared to do my hair any more I've had them in less than a month now and if I want to continue having hair extensions I will need to find a different technician which means I will have to take all this hair out and have a new applied .

Two days ago I went to my friends stylist to get my hair dyed Burgundy. She did my hair turned away from the mirror sonI couldn't see anything she was doing. The color ended up coming out about two to three shades lighter then I wanted but I was ok with the color. she proceeded to blow and wrap my hair. When I finally got home I unwrapped my hair only to find my hair completely chopped in certain parts! My hair is down my back the pieces that are chopped are no longer than an inch. ?? I'm going back to her tomorrow and I want to ask for my money back and/or some kind of treatment to regrow those chopped areas. Do you guys think that request is appropriate?

So, I had waist length hair and need a change instead of my usual layers. Booked an appointment with RUSH earl's court branch with a consultant. I wanted an "A-line blunt long bob". The quality of the service was below average. My hair was not blunt at the back. It's uneven. The length is wrong and for the price paid (consultant is the most experienced level at RUSH salons), it looked horrid. The hair was blow dried, no straighting nothing, I was not even given a mirror to check out the back of my hair. Was very disappointed and sent them an email. A refund is a remedy but waiting 1-2 months with a bad haircut, till your hair grows back to fix it is not worth it! Always stick with your regular stylist and never go to a new person when considering a drastic change. Salons give employees titles and price ranges but there'S no quality control in these franchises. They claim to be consultants, but where's the proof? The websites don't even offer a list of their employee names with titles. How do we know, we are getting what we paid for?

My hair appointment before last I was left with hair color in too long while the hair stylist stacked up another appointment and made me wait while she foiled another client's hair. This led to my beautiful blonde hair lifting too much and looking like a platinum blonde. Up until that appointment it had beautiful natural looking tones and was multi tonal. I discussed the idea of going down one hair shade to tone it down. I liked the shade of blonde my stylist had and she said it was at least 5 shades down from what I currently had. Well, let me tell you, she didn't go down 1 shade, she completely changed the color of my hair altogether. My hair had the classic greening around the edges as if I had been swimming in a pool, it also had the old lady bluing tint to it. To say I was unhappy with the color was putting it mildly. I called the salon back mere hours after I had my hair done only to receive a call back the following day from the owner, my stylist, telling me that it was a beautiful shade and that I would have to wait until my next appointment. WHAT??? I'm the customer and if I say I'm not happy with the color, what the stylist thinks is null and void. It's my hair and I know how I want it and also what color. It's a completely different color now, my only alternative to to go to another salon ASAP and have it fixed at my expense. I will return to said salon, but since my stylist is also the owner she will no longer receive a tip of any kind. After all, you're not supposed to tip an owner as we all know. I've noticed that she can do a wonderful job but don't dare say that any cut and or color didn't come out as the customer wanted, she'll turn cold and tell you that it looks nice, and refuse to remedy the situation. In other words, your words will fall on deaf ears. y

I went to get my hair done with dark brown highlights and but she did gold highlights and then dabbed red colour and made every thing red, and also her products were very cheap with no quality at all. It looks so bad and I expressed my feeling saying that it was not good. Not only charging extra for the worst service, she was also being racist saying that Indians are worst and she never wanted to take Indian customers. The lady was very rude, she shouted the whole time and I wanted to do something about this as I don't want to see anyone in this condition. Can someone suggest me a way to complain about this situation.

Had asked for dark roots thru to mid-length n blonde lighter ends. Ended up having sections of hair at inch or so long feel like they've been burnt off. My hair was middle if my back it's now above shoulders n need at le as t 4inches cut off still.
My hair is like cotton wool and wire. My confidence has gone my hair is disgusting, he's offered to do a keratin treatment not that I've heard bk about this or even what him to do it.
I've spent a fortune on conditioners oils hair supplements, looking at extensions and another hairdresser to cut it all off.

I went to a hair salon to have my hair coloured. They offered an online consultation to which you send pics of your current hair and what you were wanting. They provide you with a quote for this and you book your app. I accepted the quote and went into the salon. Was then advised that another sitting (at my cost) was needed. However after my last sitting, have walked out and burst into tears as it is nothing like I asked for. I contacted the salon they said they could rectify it, I reluctantly agreed but asked for a more senior stylist only to be told it was the senior stylist that had been doing my hair from the start. I am not happy at going back to her now to fix this. At the time in the salon she said this was the best she could do with the tone and now I am being told they can fix it. I do not want to go back, I have no faith in them. I would like a refund for me to go and get this rectified. I have pics before and after and also what was shown I wanted. I have been back and forth on social media with the owner who lives abroad but she is unwilling to refund and keeps making excuses that were never mentioned to me at the time. Is there anything I can do to get a refund?

6 weeks ago I wanted to go from black to blonde, my hairdresser was confident she could do it with two bleach treatments. I had the first lot done then went again two weeks later....
I lost about 40-50% of my hair and have been having treatments and toners since weekly at another hairdresser.
My hair is fine, weak and I have breakage everywhere.
The hairdresser never warned me about risks and seemed happy to do what I had asked. No strand test was done or discussed.
Is it my fault for asking?
I can't seem to get over what has happened to me, and I am constantly checking for breakage.
I don't want this girl to be persecuted I just want her to take some responsibility for how the whole experience has made me feel.....

Hello,

I got a bad haircut last week at a hair salon franchise. I asked for a slight trim, with just an inch off the top (Scissor cut) and a clean up on the sides and back (Grade 6 on the buzzer).

The hairdresser struggled to understand my requirements as he had only been in the country for two weeks. I spent more than five mins explaining what I wanted.

After he convinced me he knew what to do, he used his buzzer and went straight up the sides with a grade 2. I got out of the seat and told him its not what I had asked for. Immediately, another hairstylist came and I asked her to cut my hair as she had cut my hair on previous visits. I asked her to fix the situation to the best she could to rectify but she did tell me that I wont be able to get the haircut I originally wanted. (She also explained to the previous hairdresser where he went wrong and showed him by doing the other side with what I requested)

Once she had completed with cutting my hair, I proceeded to the counter to pay. In which I asked the receptionist how much do I pay as as I wasn't happy with the service. She mentioned the lowest price they can offer is £9ish, I felt my haircut deserved less than that at which point she mentioned its fine the haircut is for free. At this point, the hairdresser demanded that I paid the minimum as she had to sacrifice client time to cut my hair and felt my haircut was worthy of the minimum of £9ish. The receptionist argued with the hairdresser over this in which the receptionist told me its fine for me to go as my haircut was for free.

However, she didn't provide any sort of receipt to say my haircut was for free and that I wasn't due anything. Could I get into trouble for this? Or am I being paranoid?

No you should really give them a chance to re-do your hair - you can ask that a different stylist at the same salon/company does this for you though. If you still feel the colour is not as you requested after a second attempt you can ask for a refund.

I booked an appointment with RUSH hair salon to get a full head ombre. I had ombre before but the colour was gold rather than blond and I wanted it re-done and blonder.

After the "colour expert" bleach and blow dried my hair, I could not see any difference at all. The colour was still gold and I very politely explained how unhappy I feel about the results. She and the manager reassured in a very rude manner that they cannot do anything else to my hair and did not even offered me a discount. I left the salon devastated and almost crying as I paid £150.

In addition to the above, I was told by one of their staff members that as a new client I get 50% off my first bill, which turned out to be false! They again did nothing about that and made me pay the full price and even threatened that they will sue me for theft if I do not pay in full.

Consequently after speaking to their customer service, I found out that I had half head ombre and not full head, which was not communicated to me at the consultation.

Now they want me to go back and re-do my hair, but I do not wish to see these people again and also do not want any further service from them and I demanded a full refund because of the whole experience. I also provided before and after pictures and they could not say which one is the before and which one is the after, which proves my point that there is not difference in my hair at all.

Am I in full right to keep chasing them for a full refund as I do not wish under any circumstances to have any other services from them. To me they are not professional and on top of that lied to me about the discount.

Thank you

Have you actually been back to the original salon with the photos and information you've been given? That should be your first step. They should at the very least, refund you. If you're looking for compensation - it might be worth seeking legal advice. If you don't want/can't afford to do this, work out how much this has affected you and your life/income etc and give the salon a figure that you'd accept as compensation. If they do not offer you anything, you could consider taking it to the small claims courts. The fact that you have left it until September to do anything may go against you.

I have now been to Headmasters hairdrssers four times for half a head highlights and it still look absolutely disgusting ! ( ginger roots which start back an inch with lighter blobs on the temples and bright white blonde streaks under my ears) . They have dyed over my already damaged hair four times and every time they have made it worse! Because they kept on telling me that the next person was s manager then a colour expert I let them do
It , and it ended up more diabolical every time. My hair is now like grey murky straw and broken off around my hairline , I have had to slick it to head with kerastase serum and coconut oil and brown root spray on the patchy front . They have said they're giving me back my money but now my hair is destroyed and I have spent a total of 9 hrs on my week off work and could not go out anywhere as it looks so bad , I feel I deserve compensation .
What are my rights bearing in mind my hair is so badly dome I cannot wear up or down and I can't even colour it myself as it will literally fall out ??
ConsumerRightsExpert Editor 24/08/2016 at 1:59 pm
Firstly you should demand a full refund for this, regardless of whether they've tried/offered to fix it for you. It might be worth going to another salon to try and get it sorted out and trying to reclaim your costs via the courts from the original salon.

I'm devastated, I took a big step for me by having my hair cut. It was about to my waist. I took pictures into the salon 3 same style cut with one straightened ant the others just rough dried wavy/tousled. All arm pit length ish. Then another photo with highlights placed lightly round the graduating hair line, with a few scattered throughout these were to be coloured a raspberry/ purple shade. I didn't leave anything to chance, I had looked through hundreds of hairstyles over the last few weeks, to find the best to suite my face. I could have cried, my cut is above my shoulders and Like a Bob. And where was bleached (damaging my hair) to put the bright colour was now even darker than the rest. And to top it off a big chunk of grey roots hadn't been done right on my hairline at the front. I agreed to go back the following day to fix the colour. I asked her not to bleach the same bits again but to do different worrying that my hair might fall out of something. She did this then put another colour on. When I sat at the mirror after washing it out I nearly screamed, it was bright blue. She put yet another colour ok very it again and some bits are slightly pink ish but still blue and even white bits that have been completely missed. I have to go back yet again to try n fix it. I refused to go until Thursday as all this treatment will ruin my hair, I have many photos all through this and have just realised she never once put a mirror so show the back, obviously she knew what my reaction would be. The main stipulations I said to start with were that the layers were long enough to tie up, I can't even keep the back tied up now it falls out at the neck it us too short. The other was not to make me go blue or green as I hate the coliurs. I think I have been very good about all this but the colour can be changed I can't have the extra 5or6 inches of hair back. What can I do?.

Went to salon to have cut and colour.i sent them a photo prior to app of colour i wanted. also sent them pics of my own hair colour they told me they can achieve this. they never did a skin patch test and i went for app and explained and showed photo again however stylist did a different do and added odd highlights
I paid for it but complained and asked for another app as she put red dye all over my roots and rest of my hair was dark brown to add more highlights to blend my red roots.i could not see the owner so when i got home i msged her.i didnt want to go in all guns blazing so i started with thanks for my amazing layers meaning cut look forward to next app.when she replied i then wrote to her explaining i like my haircut but not the colour how she left my hair and its nothing like the photo i sent in and how i shouldnt have to pay again to blend red roots she made the mistake of getting colour wrong big time and tried to say its because of my previous colour but i sent photos of my hair and they could of done a strand test.after a few back and forth msgs where they were telling me that i had told stylist i loved it they offered not to charge me to finish the job i kindly declined as i feel theres to much bad feeling ( i did not trust them to do my hair after that) i went back to salon to show owner my hair and she would not deal with me as it had nothing to do with her as her partner bought the place but she runs it and i can msg him.so i did and he did not want to see my hair or explain why i did not get a test patch. I then left a review saying i feel ripped off and fobbed off for more info msg i have taken photos.when the owners saw this they wrote back that i was a liar that i had numerous freebies may i state it was my first time in this salon that i didnt need test patch i only had highlights that i claimed to say i loved my hair and days later i changed my mind. Is there anything i can do as they have lied and ruined my hair i have before and after photos and all msgs exchanged.
kind regards

I went to a salon yesterday to have my hair coloured, whilst they were putting bleach on I felt it start burning and now have a big clump of my hair singed. I've lost about 15 inches in length on that area. They did a patch and strand test a couple weeks ago and all was ok. I'm absolutely devastated and would like to find out if I can take this further? Any suggestions appreciated

There is no regulatory body for the hair industry although the hair council is campaigning to make regulation compulsory for all hairdressers. The Hair Council holds a voluntary register of those wishing to be part...only about 10 - 15 % of all hairdressers registered at the moment however. You may have to resort to the small claims court but will be encouraged to try mediation first.

I had my hair curled at a salon And they've damaged it by burning it with straighteners.
I'm not happy with reply they give me is there a governing body or do I have to go through a small claims court?
ConsumerRightsExpert Editor 08/08/2016 at 2:30 pm
Did you tell them on the day you had the colour done, that you did not like it?
ConsumerRightsExpert Editor 08/08/2016 at 2:22 pm
If it's within the last 24 hours or so (the time during which you should be making your complaint), they should remember you. Many salons do not give receipts but if you have one, all the better.
Anmajo123 05/08/2016 at 9:18 pm
And how many days from my last visit.I have to get a refund,if it is 10 days after my app, can I still get a refund for colour I don't like?
Anmajo123 05/08/2016 at 8:05 pm
Hi, do I need a original receipt from the salon for a service done on my hair to get a refund?
ConsumerRightsExpert Editor 02/08/2016 at 10:00 am
Firstly, she left happy and didn't return at any point in the following day or two to complain or give another stylist at the salon a chance to rectify it (in the absence of the stylist who did the hair) so her chances of proving anything in court would be slim. Also, she hasn't paid so it's unlikely that any compensation would be offered. It sounds like she's just "trying it on" and it might be best to simply write off the £100 and just refuse to cut/colour her hair again at your salon. Your regular, happy clients will not let this affect them.

Please could you give advice, a self employed hairdresser in my salon did a clients hair nearly 2 weeks ago, he spent over 4 and a half hours stripping and colouring her hair, he charged £100 the client left the shop 'happy' but went to the bank to get money and did not return to pay! He was going on holiday the next day and had no contact from the lady and no contact for her. By pure coincidence another stylist saw the lady a couple of days later and confronted the lady about not paying she said that she wasn't happy with her hair and would pay when he got back and he would have to sort her hair out. He contacted her whilst he was on hol to say he would sort it and when he returned txt her to ask her to bring money in and he would look at her hair. She is now asking for compensation of him for going to another salon to have it treated and asking for free products to treat her her and sending quite threatening messages saying that she's going to the papers etc about our salon and she's sending her fiance to pick up products up.
We've said we're reporting it to the police and she said 'it's civil not criminal and she will be taking us to court which will be bad publicity for the salon'. Is it classed as that because she hasn't paid initially surely she shouldn't be compensated for a service she hasn't paid for and hasn't given chance for it to be rectified . Any advise appreciated, thankyou

My daughters dad has allowed his girlfriend who is not a qualified hairdresser and is still studying hairdressing to dye my 13 yr old daughters hair it is a total mess her natural hair colour is light brown shes put a blonde colour over it with roots showing surely shes not allowed to do this as shes not qualified I would like to know if I can take action against her

You could go back and ask for a refund, if the bald patch was definitely caused by the barber in question. They won't be able to do anything about your bald patch but at least your next cut will be free.
Very Leary 10/07/2016 at 6:41 pm
Hi,

I went in for a slight trim to the same stylist I've used for over a year. My hair was very long and thick, very healthy. During 'consult' before washing she told my I should get a Brazilian treatment. Although I have had then in the past, I wasn't ready to do it again due to monetary constraints. When I sat in the chair she asked how much I wanted cut off. I told her just as every other time she gave me a trim, just about an inch or so....as little as possible.

She had me put my head down so she could reach the bottom length and when she turned me to the side I saw that she was razor cutting. I was horrified that she didn't ask if it was OK to use the razor and the cut was almost finished before I could stop her.

Needless to say, my hair is now very thin, breaking off and completely unmanageable due to the frizz from the damage done with the razor cutting technique. I'm really angry and feel that she did it intentionally so that I would need a straightening treatment afterwards.

I have a similar situation about five years ago with a different stylist at a different salon. Same trick.....she had suggested the Brazilian several times and after my 3rd visit she really pushed the sale hard, but I once again declined because I could not afford it. So, she cut my whole head with the razor. After my first wash it was exactly how it is this time.

So, the first time (five years ago) I freaked out over the damage and called a big name salon. I spoke with a manager and they fit me in to redo a cut and managed to salvage some of my length but it was much shorter after the repair trim. That particular stylist explained how the razor works, cuts and can be very damaging if used improperly. Since then I'd never had a razor cut again.......until this current fiasco.

I feel that both incidents were done maliciously as an effort to force the Brazilian service as a necessity after giving a damaging cut.

Has anyone else ever had this happen? I'm left wondering if it's a trick of the trade. If so, I find it to be very disturbing. I'm back to boycotting any salon treatment again - even for just a trim.

Hi had my haircut in the only barbers on Wednesday in town nothing too drastic just a graduated short back and sides as my hair is very thick it needs thinging out. I normally have it cut rather than shorn but being the summer i have had a grade 2 at the back..I have double crown so understand it can be a tad tricky to cut. But when i got back and washed my hair i noticed that a pretty noticable bald spot had been left as it's a different lengthThinking back. I wasn't actually shown the back of my head once it was finished the guy cut his finger and went away for a few moments did look very sheepish as i left. The rest of the cut looked really neat and smart and he was very passive so i don't want to go back with all guns blazing..But just wondering as to what my rights actually are?? Other than wearing a hat until the bald patch disappers of course.

Hi I need some advice I went to the hairdresser for a bridesmaid pratice and when curling my hair with straighteners she burn all my hair she put wax on before using heat and said she always does that but I'm sure that's what burnt it . I have payed out over £150 on treatment to help the condition but still no improvement. What shall I do ?
ConsumerRightsExpert Editor 30/06/2016 at 12:44 pm
In general you have to give the stylist a chance to recitfy any problems. Your best chance of a refund (if the original salon will not pay up) is to try the small claims court.
ConsumerRightsExpert Editor 29/06/2016 at 11:58 am
If you do not feel you were given the relevant advice/information before the styling, then you could try the courts. If lots of your natural hair has fallen out along with the braids, then you may well have a case. Get advice from an independent stylist before advising the origial stylist that you want a full refund or will be considering legal action. This may be sufficient.

Hello I wonder if you can help I'm not sure what way to go. I went to the hairdressers yesterday I always have highlights and this time I decided to have a full head of colour the lady said because I have dark underneath my hair and the rest blonde she would have to bleach the whole head she knew I had psoriasis I had mentioned this and it's quite obvious on the scalp she then continued to bleach my head the bleach was on the scalp which was burning intensely after the bleach the hair was orange she said don't worry it won't stay like this as it should be a warm blonde she then put the colour over the hair she never done sections she done it over the sink like shampoo left it for 20 minutes it was still nipping my scalp washed it out the colour was horrendous it just looks like bleach so she re-colour is the hair again with a slightly darker blonde she said she was in a hurry as she was going on holiday another lady took over it was looking orange but they kept saying it wasn't by this time the hair was dry my scalp was in so much pain she then Cut my hair when I left my partner said look in the mirror it was orange. I was so upset I had been there over three hours. I went into another hairdresser spoke to a lady who seemed to know about colour and she said they should never of put bleach then a colour on top as the cuticles open up and it sucks all the colouri in she then put a light colour on my hair is made a little bit of a difference. But I've ended up paying £70 to 1 hairdresser £40 to another. And my scalp is still sore and my hair is still not the colour I wanted felt very stressed today and took the morning off work I did go down to the original hairdresser this morning there was no manager there and the girls are foreign and one of them couldn't understand what I was trying to say so I've left my number for them to call back I'm happy just having a full refund but if they do not do this I'm not sure what path to go down kind regards Carmen

On 06/16/2016 a licensed mobile stylist came to my home and installed crochet Senegalese braids in my hair. Upon coming in to my home she stated that my hair was "short" which is only accurate to the back. I had it tampered back in January and has sense grew. She stated that she had braiding her that she would add in order for her to complete the style. Over the course of a week, multiple braids came out with my natural hair attached (my roots included). I contacted her on 06/26/2016 to inform her of the issue with photos attached. All she replied back was "Your hair was short in some places making it hard for me to grip. I would just wait until your hair grows before getting them again". Never did she attempt to rectify the problem. I took to her FB business pg and wrote a review. She deleted the bad review and texted this message "Normally i try and rectify the problem, however, Insulting me as a stylist and "attempting" to threaten my business lost you any chance of rectifying this problem and/or getting any sort of refund.

When you request my services and your hair is already damaged, broken, and dry...you can't expect your style to last as if your hair was long, natural, and healthy. You can tell in the pictures you sent me that your hair was short..I couldnt even cornrow all the way to your nape. When I first arrived at your appointment my reaction was "Oh, your hair is short ??!" And your response was "Yea, I forgot" (end of message). She then proceeded to add a disclaimer on her business pg about how "installing crochets to my texture and length of hair would result in hair loss". Could I take her to small claims court after I give her the 14days to reimburse? As a stylist it was her responsibility to educate me on my hair and provide me the option of knowing the style would take my natural hair out. And to subliminally insult me after her errors makes it worse.

Hi I had my hair done on Saturday and asked my hairdresser to cool my hair down slightly as it had gone a bit brassy ( my hair is very long ombré being darker blonde at the top and light blonde) I showed her a picture of what I would like it to look like, but it's nothing like it. My hair is now dark brown and lilac as she used a toner on it to tone down the brassiness.
I called this morning to tell her my concerns and have been back in for a deep cleansing shampoo and a warmer toner put on. She claims that it was the silver shampoo that made it lilac and would simply wash out. I washed it 3 times over the weekend to try and rectify this to no avail.
After leaving today it it not as lilac but still not what I asked for.
What are my rights?
ConsumerRightsExpert Editor 20/06/2016 at 2:27 pm
If the hairdresser will not address you concerns satisfactorily, you should get the colour rectified at another salon and claim the cost off the original hairdresser (via the small claims court or alternative dispute resolution if necessary).

I had full hair highlight done a week ago. At the end of the appointment , my highlight was very patchy and the technique did not match the picture that I showed hairdresser during consultation. Also the colour chosen was not the same.
I contacted them then next working day and put a complaint. I told the hairdresser that the highlight was very patchy and the colour was orangish/yellowish tone when it should have been shade of brown like chosen during the consultation process. She told me because I had so many layers on my hair she ‘tried’ to achieve as nearer as possible to the ‘picture’ that I showed her. She never advised me that the highlight technique I wanted was not achievable on my hair! She also told me that the toner might have faded away and that it might be a good idea to re-do the toner. But I will have to pay for this, which I was not happy about. We had a bit of a discussion on this, then she advised that she would get back to me after she has spoken with her manager. But she never did and after waiting 2 day I chased up again! After having a bit of discussion over the phone and I was asked to come into the salon. I saw them the next day. The hairdresser who had done my highlight said that the toner has ‘definitely' faded away. She did not comment the patchy highlight technique. So when I raised the issue, she said if they put in another darker toner it ‘MIGHT’ hide the patchiness. However they will have to charge for this as this was ‘a new service’ for them. I was not happy with this. The hairdresser was basically going back and forth to relay my concern to her manager, when the indifferent manager finally decided to show up.
I had put my concern all over AGAIN! Even showed the picture of highlight technique I wanted. But in the end she said“there is nothing to fix, your hair is exactly the same as the shown picture, the toner eventually fades away and as we are providing a new service to you we will have to charge for this.’ I was absolutely shocked, angry and distressed to know this! I felt exhausted! So I asked her about their formal complaint policy and procedure that I could put in writing. She said they do not have a complaint procedure and basically told me ‘what are you going to do putting it in writing as it is only going to come to me?’ She reluctantly provided her personal e-mail address.
Please help! (1) What are my rights in regard to this?(2)Can I claim back form them when i get it fixed by some other hairdresser.how?(3)when I put it in writing do I have to wait for their response before I get my hair fixed? If yes, how many days do I have to give them to respond me?

Hi, I had my hair done 3 weeks ago and was happy with it but it wasn't the final stage so I went back to have tint on it as it had faded and some blonde through the ends of the colour I already had which I liked, however my hair dresser but blonde through the half of my head and got rid of the colour I liked it came out with orange bits then she coverd a chunk with the brown I had that turned black so I have brown hair, orange chunks with some blonde underneath (it was meant to be ombré) and I black chunk on one side. I paid £115. I want to cry I have multi coloured hair. Please help I don't know what to do and I don't want them touching my hair again.
ConsumerRightsExpert Editor 09/06/2016 at 2:28 pm
We suggest you try and get this fixed elsewhere and the cost back plus a refund from the original hairdresser. Are they registered with the hairdressing council? If so, report it there too. You might want to consider a claim in the small claims court if the salon refuses to pay. Consult a solicitor about compensation for loss of work and psychological damage.
ConsumerRightsExpert Editor 09/06/2016 at 12:37 pm
Because this a dispute over whether it's the hairdresser's fault or not, the normal consumer rights may not apply here. It might be worth getting a second opinion before you proceed.

Hi, just had a pretty traumatic experience at a hairdressers in London & I really would like some advice as they are being rather uncooperative in helping me.

I am a new customer to this store & was lured in by a promotional leaflet that I purchase for £50 stating I would be getting lots of various treatments and a permanent colour. I went in today and claimed my permanent colour and asked very clearly to just have my roots touched up from a mousy brown to my usual bleached blonde. The woman after some uneasy deliberation then told me she was not going to bleach my hair as that would damage it & she used something else, a colour tint i think. I thought she obviously knew what she was doing but when I came out of the wash chair, my hair was a terrible bright brassy colour. I told her politely could she fix it. She said she could add a toner but that it would cost an extra £20. I agreed and she added a heavy amount of toner. I came out of that wash and my whole head was blue. She had left it on too long. I then told her to fix it. And she then dyed it the correct colour but my roots were still bright ginger. Another stylist then came over, informed me that I didn't suit blonde, and gave me two options in moving forward. That I could either pay more money to have it bleached, or to have it dyed brown to get rid of the blonde. I couldn't have it bleached as my scalp was raw and bleeding due to the three rounds of dye, and so I had no choice but to go brown. This is a nightmare for me as I work as a performer that needs to have blonde hair, and so I am now out of work due to their mistake. The final time I came out of the wash chair, I was in so much pain from the dye on my scalp that i was fighting back tears. My hair was a horrible colour with streaks and bands where the treatments had all gone wrong and by that point I was exhausted from 5 hours of pain. I just wanted to leave. The salon then charged me £57 for the hair??? I was too scared to demand a refund as I'm only young, and they were very intimidating. My family have been on the phone to them since trying to negotiate any form of refund, and they have been ending calls and arguing very rudely with them. I'm very distressed and have no idea how to go about this. I'm now down £107 and they want me to go back and pay £90 to get it fixed!?? Help!! Thanks in advance! X

Hi I am very much in need of someone to answer my query and email the answer back to me.
I have had someone come to my house and dye my hair (highlights). Previously when this hairdresser done my hair it was always perfect on two occasions. but recently she done my hair again and the highlights was not blonde and turned orange after 2 washes. She came back round straight away and coloured it with a toner to keep the orange down and after another two days its turned back to the same colour orange and the toner faded away.
I advised her the situtation and said this is her products thats fading and she is not using the good stuff on my hair.
She replied to this by saying, because i ahve been dying my hair different shades of brown and blonde this is why the colour is not coming out, my arguement was if the damage was on my hair then when she started dying my hair the colour would not have come out right away rather than it fading after few washes.
Now am sick of this, she wants to dye my hair again on the third occasion, my hair has gone straw and i have headaches and scalp itchiness.
I want my refund back.
please can someone help me?
Email me back please if you can asap.
Thanks

If an independent expert has agreed that the damage is a direct result of the colouring, you should be able to ask the original hairdresser to rectify it free of charge. If that is not possible you should receive a refund.

This was my second visit to the hairdresser. After my first visit my hair was ok although the colour was lighter than the rest of my hair tone but booked a second appointment. The second visit is where the issues started as my hair started to fall out dramatically. I noticed they were breaking from the point where they were coloured or where the colour was overlapping from the previous visits colouring. Even after washing my hair when slightly pulling them they would break.
I went back asking for a refund as my hair was badly damaged. I was told by the hairdressers directors, she is the one that done my hair and she is the owner of the place, that it was my baby hair growing back and if my hair does fall out I probably need to visit a doctor as she has done nothing wrong.
I went to other hairdresser to get an opinion about my hair condition. She did give a written analysis confirming that my hair was damaged and that it will take around a year to return to its original condition and may require cutting.

Please advise if I should ask again for refund, to claim the bill from hairdresser that done my hair now, or if I just should take it further? Thank you.

My 14th year old daughter that has jet black shoulder length hair wented with her friend to a salon and ask them to frost her hair silver they didnt do a patch test and they bleach her hair it came out orange yellow my daughter was in tears she complained the hairdresser said they couldnt fix it and my daughter had to pay 100 dollars for this i took her back and they told me the same what can i do
ConsumerRightsExpert Editor 27/05/2016 at 10:17 am
If the stylish has clearly not carried out you wishes and/or damaged your hair, you should be able to claim a refund. This is very subjective however and your hairdresser could claim that they simply carried out your wishes, or that you agreed to their suggestions.
ConsumerRightsExpert Editor 27/05/2016 at 9:57 am
Complain to the salon to make sure this doesn't happen to anyone else. They should give you a refund for the initial payment, but If you wanted to seek additional compensation for this, you might have to do so via the courts.

I had my hair cut and coloured at a salon 3 weeks ago . I asked for full head of highlights ( I am dark but have been blonde for 6 years ) Hair was well past my shoulders but I had 1 bit of hair ( shorter layer ) that kicked out at back so the "senior" stylist/owner advised she take some weight of the layers that were just about at shoulders but advised 2in off them She said that thinning my hair ( which is really thick and I always get thinned ) wouldnt help the kick . I took her advise and was happy enough with paying the £110 for it . I washed it the following day and it became apparent that the layers were too short compared to the rest of my hair and the stuck out all the was around my head looking ridiculous , it was then that I noticed I had a dark spot at front near fringe that hadn't been coloured properly . On closer inspection I then noticed that I still had roots and grey showing . I called back and went back for another stylist to check it as I wasn't available when manager was . She said there was nothing wrong with it , after much persuasion she agreed to fix the colour at front , she done this and I asked her to thin it out as well . My hair is now worse and looks like rats have been chewing on the end of it . She thinned layers but not the back and I still have roots all over head . I spoke to manager the following day who advised Me I should have told her I "didn't" want any roots showing and blamed the way my hair is lying on past hairdresser who has cut my hair for 2 years and thinned it with no problems in past ( she was on holiday hence why I went elsewhere ) She suggested I go back in and she will see what she can do ! And that it would be fine once it grew . She also offered to it it short to get rid of the " kick " i told her I had been twice and was disappointed and devastated that I can't wear my hair down so I wasn't going back incase they made it worse I have a wedding in July and although I had told her I may be getting it cut shorter after the wedding although I hadn't made my mind up but now feel I don't ha e a choice as some of the layers are actually cut to the top of my ears . I have left a negative comment on their Facebook page but is there anything I can do to claim the money back ? The money isn't the issue as I can afford to get it recoloured with own hairdresser but I feel annoyed that they have gotten away with Ruining it ( also friends and family can't believe my hair which I take pride in now looks like it does ?? )

My stylist did a Brazilian Blow out on my frizzy curly hair. It was great at the shop but 2 days later my hair started feeling brittle and very frizzy. It completely took all my curl and ended up frizzier than it has ever been. She told me that she didn't know why my hair would react that way but she would redo it at no charge. She reassured me that my hair would look and feel amazing and healthy, she said it would be in better shape than it had been before the first time. I worried about doing it again but she said it was safe and that the more you do the Brazilian Blowout the better your hair gets.
My hair was shoulder length. WAS. It completely ruined my hair. It is breaking off, dry and each strand seems to have several splits.
I have had to cut it several times in the last month. (I have always cut my own hair) It will look and feel like I have cut out all the burnt hair but then in a few days it starts breaking again. I've noticed my pillow has hair of every length on it. I have to carry a lint roller to keep all the pieces off of my shoulders at work. I cut it again 2 days ago and it felt so much better. It has started all over again this morning.
Right now it has only been a month and my hair is almost in a pixie cut. I can't imagine what it will be in a few more weeks. This has been a nightmare.

I had shoulder length wavy hair which I have had a few very long lengths cut into to soften the very ends. I recently had my hair highlights.. half a head and aand 2inches cut off. When dry the hair dresser said she was going to "soften "the heaviness.. she then used thinking scissors .. cutting into my long lenths.. at the time as the hair had been blown dry straight it looked ok. Now I have a frizzy mess as the shorter lengths curl inbetwen the heavier long hair . I asked her specifically not to cut short lenthgs into my hair.. this is going to take at least a year to rectify. Any suggestions?? My hair looks like a mop now! She should not have used thinning scissors .. I have read about this.. yet she is a very well paid hairdresser.

You should ask for compensation that reflects the stress and any actual expenses that you have incurred. You should also report them to Trading Standards - it sounds as though they need more training!
ConsumerRightsExpert Editor 19/05/2016 at 10:33 am
Bleach does dry your hair out, so you'd need to establish whether this was partly due to the condition of your hair before the colouring etc. It might be worth getting a second opinion. If it's deemed the hairdresser is at fault you can ask them to rectify it.

I had my hair done around a month ago and I had a blonde ombré/baylayge done, around four days after my hair started to dry out where the bleach was, I have tried conditioning masks, oils and everything you could think of, my hair now looks very dry and now resembles hemoineies hair in the first year of Harry Potter, I had this done in a salon and I was wondering if I had any rights for a refund or for them to rectify this? Help!!
ConsumerRightsExpert Editor 10/05/2016 at 12:24 pm
No they should have rectified it for free. Go back to them and quote the Consumer Rights Act 2015

Hello so I have a bit of a dilema. I died my hair blonde before and the roots were growing in brown and were about an inch or two long. What I had wanted to be done was for them to simply lighten my roots so that it matched the rest of my hair. I was very specific as to what I wanted and watched the entire time to make sure they were doing it exactly as I had asked. I specifically asked them not to color any of the rest of my hair in to make sure that the roots did NOT have any orange tone in them. Long story short, i was questioning my hairdresser the entire time because I didn't agree with the way they were doing it. He assured me everything would be fine and that I would love how it turned out and how beautiful it would be etc, etc. After about 3 and a half hours, my roots were a bright light orange and the rest of my hair was a dark greyish green color. I was shocked. I respectively told him this is not at all what I asked for but he kept trying to assure me how good it looked. I was still unhappy but he insisted on blow drying my hair to show me what it would look like dry. I asked him not to and to only dry a small strip of my hair so that I could see because when I blow dry my hair it becomes a frizzy afro. He told me this was because I straighten it too much and that it was damaged because of me. So without another word he started tugging and blow drying my hair and by the end i had an orange and grey afro. I just took a brush and tried to fix the ugly frizzy mess. When I went to the counter they said it was going to be $165 - yes, he charged me for a "professional blow dry". We asked to speak to the manager but they were unavailable so we just paid, left our name and number and asked them to call us as soon as possible. The next day, they called and the manager said that it was because of my hair that it turned out so wrong (not because of them) and said that I could come in and they could try to fix it, but that the orange would not go away.. They could only try to help it and put highlights in to give me back the blonde hair I had before, but that they would have to charge me for it because it wasn't what I had originally went in there for. I don't want them to try and fix it, I just want a full refund and go somewhere else but they are refusing and now I have bright orange roots and dark grey hair everywhere else. What can I do?? (P.s sorry this was so dragged out, I wanted you to know the full details.)
ConsumerRightsExpert Editor 06/05/2016 at 2:25 pm
Yes you should have given the stylist the opportunity to rectify the damage.
Sunny 05/05/2016 at 3:15 am
My hair is really beat damaged I asked the stylist for a refund and she said at first that she would give me half and then do another service which I refused. She then said she would not give me a full refund it just wasn't happening. She was very argumentative with me and very disrespectful. She said how could I know my hair was heat damaged if I haven't had it straightened in 3 years (I am natural with an Afro) I told her that I washed my hair since the service and it did not return to its original state and to just give me my money back and I would go elsewhere and I got an opinion from another hair stylist at a different location she said it smells burnt and is damaged. She said I can report her for this because she was nasty and refuses a refund. My hair is really heat damaged badly. The stylist I went to said oh well you washed your hair and went to another stylist so I'm not refunding it but no one has done my hair at all and even after washing you can still smell the burnt hair.
ConsumerRightsExpert Editor 03/05/2016 at 11:59 am
If a refund is refused and you feel you have good grounds for one, then you can:
Report them to a trade association if they are members of one - such as the National Hairdressers' Federation or the Hair Council
Ask they are members of an alternative dispute resolution (ADR) scheme. If they don’t respond or won’t use an ADR scheme, keep a record of the fact that you asked them. Call the UK ADR Helpdesk on 0345 404 0506 for further assistance.
Use the small claims court to claim a refund/compensation.
sam 30/04/2016 at 10:07 am
We did all this receipt copied and attached to a letter with her saying no chance of a refund when she went wrong on my child hair what can I do now?
ConsumerRightsExpert Editor 25/04/2016 at 2:40 pm
She should attempt to rectify this, if it cannot be rectified you should be given a refund. You need to be able to prove that the final hairdo was not what you asked for. If all else fails, write a formal letter and post it to her asking for the refund and threatening the small claims court if you don't receive it.

I need some advice. I had my hair done on Wednesday by a mobile hairdresser. She attempted to do a balayage blonde on my hair & I can only say it's now an unfixable mess. It's dark brown on top with yellow blonde pretty much a block colour from the bottom. It's not blended in the slightest & now my hair is completely ruined due to the bleaching onto a dark colour. She didn't offer a patch test neither. She cut layers into my hair when I clearly told her not too when I sat down. I asked for a refund but she blocked my number & off her Facebook page. She then said I sent her abuse & horrible texts which isn't true. I'm now being left to pay over £100 to sort my hair, I've been trying desperately to grow it for 2 years & I think it may need cutting to take off the damaged ends ?? What can I do? Thank you.

I went to the hair dressers Saturday. I told my hairdresser I wanted a natural brown. When the colour was On I asked if its correct as it looks greenish. She said yes it's fine. Once washed and dried I was right the colour was wrong. I had ginger roots and green ends. Considering I'm medium brown this was not right. She then dried the life out my hair to the point my head was burnt and the smoke was horrific. After nearly crying in the shop she put another colour on. I'm now practically black on my roots but still khaki green on my ends. I've messaged to say I'm not happy. What can I do I do not know if I trust her any longer

Long story short, I have been having my hair coloured for years. Went to salon on tuesday, started with a mild irritation, by yesterday morning I was in an ambulance with anaphalaxis.
No patch test ever done or offered. Need allergy tests now so have contacted the salon to ask what was used.
They are going to try and get the info next week for me as they are really busy. Where do I stand? Can I demand this information?
ConsumerRightsExpert Editor 26/02/2016 at 10:36 am
It sounds like you're not in the UK so we don't know if the same laws apply. Here you would be given a full or partial refund if the result was not at all as you wanted it and the hairdresser had not offered to fix it for free. It sounds like legal action is your only real remedy.

I went to a local salon near me that is praised for their technique and are highly reviewed for doing fashion colors and such. I wanted a pink dusting on the bottom of my hair something like an ombré affect. The salon said that that would be easy due to the fact that my hair was already blondish at the time. I was there for 8 hours and by the end the result wasn't as expected, they said the would fix it so I went in a couple days later and we tried a different color that came out absolutely perfect, I loved it. I washed my hair two days later and the color completely washed out and turned into this weird pink orange color, at this point I was extremely disappointed and exhausted from going back and forth but I went back in and they were willing to fix it they did some test strips on my hair that were nothing like the color that washed so another two hours later and I was to come back the next day to try something else at that point I went in and just told them to remove the colour and cut some of my hair by the time we were done my hair was completely damaged and looks basically how it did before so 460$ and over 15 hours in a salon my hair is damaged and looks pretty bad. I've never cried about having a bad hair experience but I completely broke down. And on top of everything else while my hair was being washed a pretty heavy bottle fell on my head it was really painful and my head still hurts today. I'm not sure what action to take at this point.

Horrible experience not relaxing at all heard owner tell off 4 members of staff (1 didn't dress glam enough, 1 needed to loose weight, 1 use less products on customers 1 take too long with clients and shouldn't take breaks). only stopped after a customer pointed out the hairdresser experience should be relaxing not hearing arguements

Colour done completely wrong and NOT what I asked. Stylist suggested I pay more for a toner which will wash out and not fix the error and tried to tell me it would fix the problem. No compassion or understanding... ignored what I asked for completely - if it costs more to put multiple colours in tell me don't go ahead and only use 1 colour when I asked for 3 shades!

Oh let's not forget I didn't get a Stylist I got a total of 5 different people give me a colour and cut. (My Stylist was overbooked and even said she has a client slotted in that couldn't be turned down so rushed off and left me with junior staff to ruin my hair! )

Now I have to pay over £100 to fix at Hobs. DON'T GO HERE!

I'm looking for some advice I had hair extensions put in two weeks ago they are horrendous, the salon has taken them out and refitted them but I am still not happy with the out come. I have been into the salon again and they have said they will take them out free of charge but will not give me a refund due to health and safety. So I'm supposed to let them take them out and just walk away £300 down?
Advice please
ConsumerRightsExpert Editor 09/02/2016 at 10:44 am
Were any promises made regarding the length of time this would last? Is it a business or someone offering a private service? In general you should give the provider one attempt to fix the problem before asking for a refund.

I had my hair straightened using a keratin treatment by a lady working from home. She had lots of good reviews on Facebook and lots of good photos and mine looked lovely when done. However after waiting the three days to wash it it has gone back to exactly as it was before. I have asked for a refund but she refused saying she will do it again. I am concerned that it won't work again and as it is a lengthy process and she lives a good distance away from me would rather have a refund. She say as she has used her products and time I wo t get a refund but I have paid a lot of mo eye and have nothing to show for it. What are my rights please?

Thank you for any help.
ConsumerRightsExpert Editor 05/02/2016 at 10:06 am
They've had one chance to fix it, so if it is completely different to that which they promised then you should be able to claim a refund.

Hi,
Last week I went to a 'prestigious' salon to have my colour done. I was talked into having a refreshed balyage instead of a full head of highlights as I'd intended to have on the promise that the hairdresser could get the desired affect in the picture I showed. By the time I left it was dark and my colour looked OK. When I woke up in the morning I had no roots (goodbye balyage?!) and an orange/ginger base colour with some yellow streaks running through it. I called first thing and explained and was invited in to fix it. I went back and after a quick chat the hairdresser told me a toner would fix it and once it had developed I was left with the trainee to dry my hair. When dry the trainee proceeded to go and get the hairdresser to check the colour, instead of coming up I was summoned down to the till where a group of them stood chatting. He made one comment about it being better and I felt so awkward I couldn't say I still wasn't happy. I made a complaint to head office as soon as home complete with pictures. They sent it to the salon owner as apparently it's a franchise and head office can't do anything. I've been back and forth in email with the salon for 5 days. I want a full refund as I don't trust them to fix it and they want me to go back and have it fixed. Am I within my rights to ask for a refund when I've already given them a chance to correct it? Where do I stand legally? Any advice would be great! Thanks
ConsumerRightsExpert Editor 28/01/2016 at 11:50 am
It would be worth asking head office for advice and also for some compensation for the walk you had to undertake! Make sure you ask whether the "fix" will be free of charge. If that does not work, then you can ask for a refund.
Grey 26/01/2016 at 11:30 pm
I had white blonde bleached hair and went to haringtons in Marlow to get my hair a more natural blonde so my hair could get healthier. I also provided a picture of what I wanted! I came out with my hair grey, orange and dark brown in parts and also stripey. I was so upset I actually cried in the salon. They said they would try to fix it and I asked to go out for a cigarette out the back of the shop until a new colourist came back. The stylist didn't seem to realise the door didn't open from the outside and I was left outside after knocking on the door for 10 minutes. I had to walk half a mile in a hair gown in the rain to get back into the shop where they proceeded to tell me it was blonde, but they would try to fix it. They added more highlights around the top and front. But even afterwards they admitted it was grey. They gave me some free products to look after my hair, but I was still required to pay over £160 for a hair colour that made me look like an old woman, with a promise to fix it but no guarantee that I would not have to pay for their mistake. Totally devastated, should I talk to their head office?
Comal 24/01/2016 at 5:11 pm
I had my hair done yesterday at a top rated salon! I went in there with perfectly ombred hair - just grown up, so needed the blonde taken higher!
I ended up with the ends white blonde which they already were when I went in and then above it a yellow colour, it's really patchy and parts of my hair hadn't developed enough before the bleach was washed off and are ginger! I can't tie my hair up as the under neath is bright yellow! I am off to the salon tomorrow to speak to them!!!!

Had a colour test 3 weeks ago at an established salon I've not used before. Discussed I wanted a subtle change in my dark brown hair with some lighter colours underneath the top layers. Came out yesterday having had the colour change and it is pale (bright)ginger and blonde it looks dreadful. I showed the stylist numerous times the colour I was hoping to get in a photo and it couldn't be more different from the photo colour at all. I had to have my original colour cleansed because it had dye already on it and was told not to be surprised if it was bright orange after this process. The final resulting colour is not far off the orange colour after the cleansing part of the proccess and luckily I took a photo at that stage. I expressed my disappointment when she had finished and she has offered to correct it but not until Tuesday. I'm too embarrassed to go out with such a drastic difference that looks awful. I wish now I had refused to pay the £140 until they had corrected it to a colour I was happy with but feel I've paid for the stylist to completely ruin my hair as it will now need further dye added to what is already dry hair. I've lost all faith in the ability of the stylist and want to have another stylist with the best colouring experience in the salon.

colourproblems 06/12/2015 at 6:52 pm
always been a mousy blonde, 5 years a go started to go grey, the salon at the time suggested that the ONLY way to go was to cover the lot in one colour so ended up with dark brown

changed salon 18 months later and was told yes you can go lighter, stripped the colour and put in highlights - well happy, sadly the salon closed so off to find another.

so went to new salon explained I needed to cover the grey, wanted to even the colour BUT keep the blonde(made this very clear) now have mid/dark brown hair again.
Have rung salon and they suggested washing a couple of times and if still not happy they will fix. to be honest the fact they didn't listen the first time I would rather get my money back and go and find someone else - what are my rights?
ConsumerRightsExpert Editor 25/11/2015 at 9:42 am
Did she say what she was going to do and explain what she was doing? Usually a good hairdresser will point to where the hair will fall on your back etc after it's cut. If you were clear about what you wanted (e.g a shoulder length cut) and the cut was nothing like your request, you may be able to ask for your money back. Usually you would ask the hairdresser to rectify the damage but it's difficult if it's all been cut off. Go back to the hairdresser first and see what you can negotiate - you could ask for a more senior stylist to give it more shape etc. If you're not happy and they are not willing to refund you, you would have to insist on a refund. Be sure that you were clear about what you wanted in the first place though. Your hair will grow back soon so try not to worry too much.

My hair was really long. I went to a hairdressers in Pembroke on holiday today called Trevors. Asked for a shoulder length cut. She cut more off. My hair looks ridiculous. When she'd finished cutting she didn't show me the back. I look like Pam Ayres / Victoria Wood in the 80's . I feel like crying.

Hi,

I went to the hairdresser 3 days ago and wanted them to color my hair platinum blonde. The hairdresser I went to is a great place that got great reviews before so I trusted my sources and went through with the big transformation. The outcome was not as good as I thought it would be. Several sections of my hair became extremely yellow, and the overall look was not what I wanted at all. I even showed the hairdresser pictures on what color I wanted. So I went back in to the store today and he wanted to help me and to make my yellow spots disappear. The extremely strong platinum bleach color was extremely uncomfortable having in my hear this second time and my head was burning through the entire process. All of a sudden I se my hear falling of parts by parts and ask him several time is My hair ok and is it going to make it? His hands was shaking but he answered me with a yes, don't worry. Today I went out their with so much thinner hair, a scalp that is still hurting, a headache because of the damaging color to my hair + my hair is so damaged, frizzy, broken and destroyed and all he could say is that this is normal. But for me this is simply not normal. I paid 300 dollars for his work and as a hair dresser that diploma hanging on his wall is stating that he is a certified hair stylist.
If my hair was in any risk of falling of or getting destroyed, a hairdresser should inform his customer, right? I definitely cant get my hair back now but is there any right to get my money back?

Thanks :(

Hi I had my hair cut and asked for an inch taken off the hairdresser has taken off nearly three inches. I am so unhappy I have spent ages growing my hair and only went to get the ends trimmed.

It cannot be rectified what are my rights?

Hello, I had micro bead hair extensions fitted last thursday. I asked for 20" 200 strand 1g hair extensions, I paid £120 which I thought was cheap but all her reviews and pictures were good. She put them in and took a picture and they looked good, she had no mirror. I got home and saw them and cried I looked awful, It didnt match, it was thin and looked fake. I messaged her straight away and she said I could back and she would fix them, I did not want her making any more of a mess to my hair.
The beads she used were blonde and my hair is dark brown almost black, so you could see every single bead!!!! I took them out myself that night, which I told her I was doing and she said she would give me a refund straight away. She never did, I have been messaging her on facebook, which she has now blocked me on,rang her and text her - she has now blocked my number aswell. I dont know what to do, if I can do anything?

I had pre bonded hair extensions fitted yesterday ... I be had the same ones before and they have been fine but this time I could not get in with the same girl to fit them in time.
I went to a new lady .. I read her reviews they were all good.. She worked from home and does hair and beauty..
I paid £80 to have them fitted ...
There was no mirror so I could not see anything
Her 9 month old baby woke up and was crawling around
I noticed she was going through them really quickly and asked if I had any more .. I had 200 of 0. 5 gms which is usually plenty.
She finished in about 2.5 hours and said that was the quickest she'd done them ...
I went to the bathroom to look and they did look fine ... I paid and left .
Driving home I felt my hair all my extensions are caught up with other hair do its pinching my scalp . The tension is pulling my hair , I'm itchy and sore . Some bonds have melted down my hair . They have been taken up to my crown at the back ... There is no uniform of pattern they have just been stuck in . Some are so close to my scalp others are far .
It's painful and hard to sleep ... Reason why I have them is my hair is so fine .. I'm worried my hair will break now .
I text her this morning to say I'm not happy at all ... I need to take them out and would like my money back and refund for hair that I bought as I can't use this hair again and will have to now buy some more when my scalp has calmed down .
She said she will right what I think is wrong ... Which I said the whole lot .., I don't want her near my hair ...
Please could some one tell me what I can do . I've been in one hairdressers today and they have said they are shocking I have pictures of my scalp and bonds ... Pls could someone help me . I don't have a lot of spare money and now I feel I've thrown £80 away and been ripped off ....
Thanks
Mandi

Hi. I have been getting crazy colours at my hairdresser for some time now. She would strip my hair to start fresh and then re colour. I always lived the result I got. My sister requested that I had a more natural colour for being a bridesmaid at her wedding 2 weeks ago. So I had my hair done 2 days before the wedding. The hair I went in with was about 2 inches of my natural red root and a washed out pale blue/green. The hairdresser decided to just put a colour over this, this time. She put a reddy/chocolate brown on but found the blue still showed through at this point so put some copper to neutralise it more. I came away with a gorgeous copper colour. A couple of days after the wedding I washed my hair and found alot of the colour washed down the plug. Someone then pointed out that there was loads of green showing through! I have just washed it again and there is none of the colour left! All you see is my natural roots and green! I paid £62 at a hairdressers because I wanted it done properly for the wedding. I myself have covered a bright blue with a chocolate brown before with no problems! I have got in touch to say what has happened and said I would pop in to show her. Will she sort my hair for me for free? I don't have another £62 or even any spare cash to pay and I really hope I'm not expected to as this all happened a couple of days and 1 wash after it was done! Please help!

I recently went to a salon where the hairdresser attempted to get my hair to rose gold color. When the color initially only showed up as a faint pink, the hairdresser told me that she could reapply the dye, let me go home with the dye, and I could wash out at home. She mentioned that her daughter did it all the time and it helped to get the color to last. She also said that the longer I left it in, the better. And if I could sleep with it on, it would really help. 15 hours later my hair turned magenta/fuchsia. Long story short, I had it fixed elsewhere and another stylist told me that what she did was illegal - is this true?
ConsumerRightsExpert Editor 10/09/2015 at 9:44 am
It's probably best to ask them for advice on which products to use (or even if they'll give you some for free) at this stage. Is it simply that the colour is not quite what you wanted? Or is part of it completely different from the rest? If the latter it's fair to ask for a partial refund or for a different stylist to try and rectify it.

I had foils on the top of my head & a tint I'm between & all over the back.it cost me £55.my hair looked ok wen she had finished but wen I got home I noticed my roots at the back of my head were bright ginger.I went back to the hairdressers who then put a tint all over my head but it is now washing out.it's been a week & 4 days since I first had my hair done & it's been a week & a day since they put the toner on which was done for free but then they charged me £10 to dry it.in total my hair had cost me £65 & it still looks a mess.is it to late for me to ask for a refund.
ConsumerRightsExpert Editor 17/08/2015 at 11:41 am
As the article says, the hairdresser should be given the opportunity to rectify any damage. If this is not done to your satisfaction, then you can have the work done at another salon and try to claim back the costs from the original salon (the small claims court may be useful for this).

I had a micro loop, la weave type put in two days ago. It was very thin looking, which I stated but she made me feel I was being ridiculous. I got home and still felt the same. I emailed her to ask if could get bit more added, but then they got sore and I looked at one which came out. I looked at the others and they all came out by just a light pull. I paid 250 for this am I entitles to a refund?

I wanted to do permanent straightening in my hair for 100 pounds and I'm sure that the hair dresser did brazilian blow dry. Permanent straigtening will be permanent in my hair but the brazilian will have it's effect for 3 months. The hair dresser did her work so unprofessionally . I can say this because I did permanent straightening 3 times before in different salon but she was doing dirrently than them. And when I said I don't like her work she was too much rude with me. And before this she canceled my appointments 8 times without calling me. I went to the salon each time and she canceled my appointments without informing me before I go there. What should I do now ?
Suzie 21/07/2015 at 10:55 pm
Going to the hairderssers is getting too much of a risk, finding a good one remote, the hair council is no real help anyway, getting nowhere with their campaign to get legislation for all hairdressers to be registered, no help for all the people who have had their hair damaged by all these Cowboys checkout the amount of people who have had problems on the Internet , put in bad hairdressers, even the big names, Trevor Sorbie salon reviews are not all that shining either, been to the Richmond salon, not impressed with the work done there, he probably never checks out any complaints himself anyway. his little laggies do, he needs to check his staffs quality of work and skills personally more often. So, where is the consumer protection then.

Hi, I went to a salon to have an Aveda Deposit Only colour in June, and I am sure the hairdresser used the wrong product. I am sure she has bleached my hair as the deposit only colour only darkens your hair, but this one has lightened my hair several shades, and it has completely dried out my hair and scalp, my hair is breaking off, and the top of my scalp is still red. I went back twice to show her the colour the week after I had it done, she cut off some of the dry bits and offered to redye it, but it is already so damaged, I said I didn't want it to be redyed. I contacted Aveda, and they have confirmed that the deposit only colour can't lighten hair, and it must have been an error by the salon, but the salon won't accept that it's an error. I have long hair, I have never used a permanent colour or bleach before and no amount of conditioning is helping. Can you advise what the best course of action is? I may have to cut all of my hair off for the first time since I was a child, it's very upsetting.
Suzie 20/07/2015 at 3:02 am
I have had some bad haircuts over the last two years, because a lot of them don't know what they are doing, you take a picture of the style you like, if they were skilled and qualified they should tell you if the style you have chosen will or not work on your hair because of maybe your hair type for example and show you a better alternative if possible, constructive advice and guidance but they don't. I don't know who to trust anymore and get out of a mess, and get a really good well formed cut, and feel good again. Where in SW London.
Teresa 15/07/2015 at 2:21 pm
Rush has ruined my hair. Asked for gold highlights, got bleached dry and damaged hair. Asked for soft layers and got a blunt cut. I have complained and been offered £15 refund for the cost of the toner that did not take over the bleach, what advise can you give? I have sent photos to them also.

@Ryn0404. It is good practice to ask about any allergies etc before giving any treatments; colourist for example, will do a strand test. Go back to the salon in person and ask what they are prepared to do...they may offer to do you hair for free on your wedding day etc. If you know you're allergic to a specific element like metal, it's always wise to mention it beforehand. The Hairdressing Council may be also be able to offer you some advice about standard procedures for hair extensions.

I had some micro loop hair extensions fitted just over a week ago for my wedding which is in 4 weeks time.I had no consultation for these, I have never had them before and all I was asked was what colour.I didn't realise that the micro loop bond is metal & I am allergic to metal so my scalp reacted & I now have red blisters throughout my hair.I have had the extensions removed but this is now preventing me from having my hair dyed or anything for my wedding.I have had nothing from the extentionist, no apology, offer of a refund or anything. What are my options? I am sure I should have been given a consultation or something prior to them being fitted. Do I have any legal rights here?

@blondehair. Did you do a strand test first? The colours on the box are never that accurate and it does depend on your natural colour (or any existing colour). You could try taking it back to Boots to see what they say, if they've had other complaints about a particular batch then you may be lucky.
Blondehair 21/06/2015 at 8:47 pm
Hi, so I have naturally blonde hair but just wanted to lighten it a little so today I bought Boots own home hair dye kit, from the guidance pictures and colour name my hair should of gone a silvery blonde, I followed the instructions down to a t however my hair has gone a horrible shade of yellow I'm so upset and distraught I don't want to leave the house what can I do in terms of complaining
ConsumerRightsExpert Editor 23/06/2015 at 2:11 pm
@littleS. She should be given the opportunity to repair./replace them herself. If she won't, go to another hairdresser and claim the money back from the original one via teh small claims courts.

I had a woman come to house to do my exstentions give her 200. It's not even been 3weeks Its all fallen out everybody is saying how fake it was i felt soo disgusting I am proper gutted. She won't refund me. I don't know what to do but save up go to the proper hairdressers! I feel soo conned.. £200 is a lot of money.

My daughter went to Rush for highlights but she was slightly late and the girl didn't have time to do it. She put a dye directly to her routes without doing a patch test. Later that evening she started an allergic reaction, she was at Uni so came home the following morning. She ended up in A&E on a nebuliser and on very strong steroids for 3 days. Customer services have ignored two emails I now have someone helping me but have asked me what her expectations are from the insurance company....how do we know she is 22 and now terrified of ever having her hair dyed again..what would you say?
ConsumerRightsExpert Editor 02/06/2015 at 2:16 pm
@Unhappyhair. You should give the hairdresser the opportunity to rectify the situation. Ask for a different stylist if you like. If you're still unhappy then go to an alternative salon and claim the cost back from the original as it says in the last paragraph of the article.

Hi,

I had my hair done today and im so upset and disappointed. I asked for a natural beliage style and she basically left my hair all patchy and i look like i have patchy clip in extensions, its just horrible. The head stylist that done my hair was so rude to me and she basically wouldnt deal with me because she had another customer. She embarrased me infront of everyone and i was in so much shock that i paid and left. As soon as i got home i saw the state of my hair. I am not able to trust this woman again and i want a full refund, my hair is disgusting! I booked an appointment somewhere else to rectify the problem. She doesnt want to refund me, all she keeps saying is to go to her solicitor. Whats the next step?
ConsumerRightsExpert Editor 01/06/2015 at 12:45 pm
@Aj94. You should not have to wait this long if you've already paid a significant amount. You should ask for your money back and say you'll just have your done as normal and forget about the offer. If this do not achieve a satisfactory outcome, you should sent a formal written request for your refund, and state that you will pursue it via a solicitor or the small claims court if you do not receive it within a certain time frame.

Hello I have recently started using a new mobile hair dresser to fit my extensions. She supplies the hair and fits it. The hair is good quality and I have no problem with fitting and styling. She text me with a deal saying the supplier had a deal on the hair so she could fit my new hair all for £70. I accepted and she came and picked £60 off me straight away as I said I would give her the other £10 when she did my hair. A week passed and she was ignoring all my text and phone calls then two weeks passed and she was still ignoring me then I finally got a text to say sorry the hair was not here yet and she will do my hair at the end of the week. It has now been 3 weeks and she is ignoring me again. I’m pretty sure it does not take 3 weeks for the hair to be delivered. I feel frustrated as my hair really need doing and she is still ignoring me. What can I do?

Thank you

Okay I had a pretty bad reaction to the hair dye or toner than this salon used. To add insult to the injury this was an upscale salon so I had around 400 dollars. One of the reasons I picked this place because I thought it used hair quality products and this type of thing would not be an issue. My hair looks hair because of trying to get the dye of out my hair, I'm taking ointments used on burn victims and I feel like the least they can do is refund me. However the hair stylist refuses and nor any getting any cooperation from the manager. Since it is a pretty large amount of money what should I do at this point which I feel was completely wasted please let me know what I can do.
ConsumerRightsExpert Editor 22/05/2015 at 11:38 am
@hariextensionist. yes as the 'retailer' you have to rectify the situation with the customer. There is nothing to prevent you subsequently claiming from the manufacturer/supplier though.
Hairextensionist 19/05/2015 at 10:02 pm
Hi, I am a qualified hairdresser and hair Extensionist. I take great pride in all my work and time. I have recently had an issue with a customer complaint with the hair supplied. The client is unhappy with the quality of hair as it is shedding excessively after only 3 weeks of wear. I am unsure how too act as previously I have dealt with a supplier in which the hair was sent off for testing leaving my client with no replacement and the problem was not resolved for over 3 months. In previous cases as not been exchanged or refunded, which then impacts me as a stylist and my business. Am I responsible too replace the hair? And take a loss.
ConsumerRightsExpert Editor 14/05/2015 at 1:47 pm
@Elv. No she has to give you a chance to rectify the 'damage' first. If she gave you specific instructions and you followed them to the letter (using your professional knowledge of course) then there's not much she can do. It would be good customer service to offer a partial refund if she is still not happy.
Elv 10/05/2015 at 4:02 pm
Hello

I did hair extensions on a client yesterday and she left my house completely happy and this morning she has sent me pictures of her hair thid morning, she has brushed out the curls our and is now saying they are not what she wanted and wants them removed

The client chose the colour of the extensions from a selection I had available, she wanted a dip dye look and that what I did

I recommended that she needs her hair coloured prior to application to help the look of the dip dye and she chose not too, and now she wants her hair coloured after I said it would be better

I have offered her a free colour to help blend as a good will gesture and she keeps saying he wants them out

Is she entitled to a refund although ive offered a solution within 7 days ?
ConsumerRightsExpert Editor 13/05/2015 at 2:17 pm
@Sarah. You have to give them the opportunity to rectify it. If you're still not happy, you are entitled to a full refund of the cost. If the salon refuses, you can get your hair done elsewhere and try to reclaim the cost (via a solicitor or the small claims courts). Trading Standards may also be able to offer advice.
sarah 08/05/2015 at 9:58 pm
I had my hair done yesterday I specifically told them what I wanted and they did a strand and patch test n told me it would be fine to do...iv come home from the salon and straightened my hair after they curly blow dried my hair to cover their mess ups to realise it was actually really bad and it is bright orange/ginger...I asked for them to sort it and they said all they can do is use a toner they won't do anything else...I asked for a refund so I can go elsewhere and they have point blank refused! I'm very distressed and upset as it's far from what I asked for and they refuse to rectify n refuse to refund iv got evidence too of all the convo with them refusing and being pregnant too I'm under alot of stress
ConsumerRightsExpert Editor 05/05/2015 at 2:14 pm
@Neysha. Let her send them off for investigation. Ask for written records of everything she's done etc. If you remain unhappy, talk to Trading Standards.

Hi I had Russian hair extensions fitted 2 months ago. Within a month the hair turned to wire wall and resembled horses hair. I complained and the owner was apologetic and advised me of the odd bad batch of hair extensions, and a world wide issue/lack of blonde hair available.
A second set was then fitted by the salon...
After the first wash the extensions were tangling/shedding. I emailed the owner and advised that I was not happy that these extensions were going the same way as the first, and that when I returned I would expect then removed and my money returned.
The salon owner decided to call the police, she confirmed it was not a threat at that she had done it. She advised that I had (in less than a week) had her extensions removed, replaced with a poor set and was trying to pass them off as hers....
She made me feel awful and that I couldn't return to the salon as I was a threat and she would call the police again.
She advised that the hair would need to be sent off to be investigated.
My only proof off their work is on my head, and the extensions are off the poorest quality.
I have no where further to go as this is an independent salon with an owner who assumes I'm commiting "fraud"
Any help is appreciated

I took my son to have his haircut for the first time in over a year, his hair was shoulder length. We found a picture to show a style but we wanted it longer, he had taken time to grow it long, we didnt want it all taken off. The stylist cut it far shorter than the picture with most of it shaven off. I was at the oint of crying when we left the salon but could not say anything at the time in front of my son as he suffers with a disability and was worried how he would respond. The sylist also took it upon herself to tell my son that that boys shouldnt have long hair, that people wont know if he is a boy or a girl and he should have short hair like a boy. I made 4 special trips in to town to meet with the manager (2 were specially arranged appointments where she didnt tell me she was poorly) Ive been told that they will refund the haircut and offer a free cut. Ive said this is not enough. He never wants his haircut again and its far too short to rectify. Ive asked for compensation but they are standing ground on refund of the £11.50 cut. Is this ALL i can expect? Im i wrong to expect more as an apology?
ConsumerRightsExpert Editor 01/05/2015 at 12:52 pm
@Lynne. Demand a complete refund and then report the hairdresser to your local Trading Standards. If you think it's worth claiming compensation, you'll need to do so via the civil courts. Also ask another reputable hairdresser if anything can be done.
Lynne 27/04/2015 at 1:34 am
My daughter has been crying all weekend. Her hair is so bad she can,t leave the house. She has long brownish blonde hair. She showed the beautician a picture of some brownish auburn coloured highlights and asked if she could do it. The picture was mainly the same light brown as her hair but a little auburn. My daughters hair is purple with reddish orange highlights. She has red dye all over her scalp and neck. We are all in shock and she is devastated. The lady said if she tries to lighten it it will turn orange. They told her it looked good and took her money. We don,t know what to do. Please can you help
ConsumerRightsExpert Editor 28/04/2015 at 1:49 pm
@viccccckyx. Is this the result of using it too often? Have you left the desired time frame between each dye. Did you follow the instructions to the letter? If so, write to/visit the retailer from whom you purchased it and see what they can do for you. Remember to take any packaging with you.
viccccckyx 23/04/2015 at 1:49 pm
Hi,

I purchased a blonde home hair dye, the same one i have used 3/4 times. However, this time instead of making my hair slightly blonder, it has made me ginger!

Are the company liable for compensation?

Regards,

Vicky
ConsumerRightsExpert Editor 25/03/2015 at 10:06 am
@Hairguru. We have to say, we agree with your boss's stance here really. See whether client follows this up and if necessary offer a voucher for a free haircut (which gives you the chance to rectify it anyway) rather than a refund. If hair has been cut into a great style, a regular trim will not make it look significantly different anyway...did the client specifically ask for a style change? All these things need to be considered.
Hairguru 22/03/2015 at 2:49 pm
Hi
I'm an experienced hairdresser (over 30 years) and I recieved a complaint from a new client 11 days after I cut her hair. She says there wasn't much of a difference from before she came in. She wants a refund. I replied in a friendly manner explaining I was mortified that someone's walking around with my work and not happy with it. I also said a refund isn't a problem. Now, the problem I have is my boss said why did I offer a refund? He said you haven't seen her hair?! He also said I'm not refunding a haircut when you haven't had an opportunity to make adjustments... After all she hasn't said its technically wrong just not much of a change. I said to my boss she's in China! And not due back for some time. I tried writing back to this client via email explaining I had no authority to give refunds but I would me more than happy to re cut her hair free of charge. She's not happy because she said in my first response a refund wouldn't be a problem. Where do I go from here ? My boss is right in saying I should have the opportunity to correct it. After all it seems a minor adjustment. Plus he also said why did she leave it 11 days before getting in touch? Thoughts please. Thanks

@Amyc. If you do not want to go back to the original hairdresser (who has after all already had one opportunity to fix it), then follow the steps suggested in the article to use an alternative salon.
Amyc 09/03/2015 at 2:38 pm
I went to a well known hairdressers in my town last Thursday. I went in with full head bleached up hair in great condition. I wanted a change and took a picture of exactly how I wanted my colour to look like (ombré with a few highlights and the ends left the same colour as they currently were) The hairdresser coured my roots with an extremely warm brown and that was it. The front of my hair looked.ok. And he didn't show me the back. When I got home I seen it and it was extremely patchy, uneven, the brown went down about 3 inches further on one side than the other, it was spotty where the colour had bled. It was a disaster. I went back and agreed to go in the following Thursday for him to fix it.He done a set of highlights through the back. Once it was washed and dried he then done another set of highlights because it still looked awful.Once he washed and dried again he said it looks a lot better. It didn't. I told him I was still not pleased, it really does look awful, still extremely patchy and he didn't do any highlights underneath so the whole of my hair is still a mess. He said "well I can't keep you here all day so go home and come back again next week of your still not happy." He agreed with me It still wasn't right. I don't want to go back to him and I'm not sure what to do? My hair looks awful :(
ConsumerRightsExpert Editor 10/03/2015 at 2:23 pm
@Stevie. Follow the advice in the article above if you feel that you would rather have your hair fixed at another salon.
Stevie 09/03/2015 at 12:50 pm
I have recently had my hair lifted 2 shades lighter by my hairdresser after discussing with her that I felt the colour she had previously done was too dark. After a long discussion and my repeated fears of it causing damage to my hair my hairdresser continually advised me that the bleach bath would NOT damage my hair. I have been back twice now and had 1inch off each time to remove split white ends ~ in 2 weeks I am now 3 inches shorter and still have damage to the ends. At this rate I will have gone from long healthy shiny hairstyle that everyone commented on how healthy it was (halfway down my back) to a bob that looks dull, dry and lifeless... I am so upset. I have tried to explain to my hairdresser how upset I am with the condition of my hair but she just seems completely in phased by this. Surely they should know the effect treatments have on hair and have a duty to be honest. I told her how scared I was bleaching and that I was worried about me having to have too much cut off it it damaged my hair and she insisted that this would not be the case...
I feel cheated and lied to and don't know what to do to get then to listen to me to put this right. I know they can't make my hair long again but I really to feel like they should to something to put this right??
ConsumerRightsExpert Editor 05/03/2015 at 10:59 am
@jolomo. Ideally a stylist should be given the chance to rectify the job and then offer a refund if the customer is still not happy.

I went to a hair salon with pictures and a very specific brief with how I wanted my hair to be coloured
I spent £100, inc cut n blow dry
After near on 5 hrs I was shown the result and felt deflated but went home. The next day I examined my hair, it was patchy, there were un-coloured patchy bleached areas, it was a disaster!! And I had the salon manager style it. I went back to complain, she offered to retint it but I had lost convidence in her, I asked for my money back and told her I would rectify the mess elsewhere. I was told they didn't offer cash refunds, and she sent me away with £60 (the colouring cost) worth of shampoo!!! I have since had my hair rectified and looking exactly like my picture request but at an extra cost of £50. I took several pictures of my hair showing the damage
Who could I contact? The original salon is part of a high street chain

I had my hair colored on Saturday , my color before was extra light blond as i have used Live hair dye for years, i wanted it toned down to a more natural blond, I now a head that looks like i have a wig on top of my own hair. they put low lights on the blond and high lights at the back as it was not as light as the top. the hair looks a greeny ash color. i have called them to tell them i'm not happy and they have asked me to go back tomorrow to have it redone i;m scared to go back. this has cost me 4 hours and £60 .

@lyndag22. Yes the hairdresser has acted incorrectly. She is the retailer and should deal directly with you - you should not be passed on to the manufacturer. Write a letter informing the hairdresser that you will be taking this to trading standards unless you received a refund. If you do not receive a satisfactory response do that. You can find details of your local standards easily via the internet or phone directory.
Lyndag22 16/02/2015 at 9:40 pm

My daughter had extensions put in £220 and after 2 weeks were dreadful she did everything she was told bought all the products the hairdresser recommended we went back to see her 3 weeks later she cut 4 inches off so daughters hair is now shorter than originally was ,but looks like a brushed out Afro ,she blamed the hair extension supplier gave us there number ,which really should have been her job ,the supplier has said for yes to send her 2 pieces fir a check but she will only deal with the hairdresser as that is her customer not us.
Day after hair being cut got a message from hairdresser to remove the extensions as they are damaging daughters hair (they've been in less than a month) we bought stuff and spent 3 hours removing them ,we ve asked for a refund she says it's not her problem ,we really can't let her get away with it how can we take it further

@Evvy. Continue with the action via the credit card to recoup what you've already paid. If you feel you deserve some compensation you may have to pursue this via the small claims court. Work out how much you feel woudl be relevant and then speak to a legal professional or the Citizen's Advice Bureau.

My sister had a weave done last night. The result is awful and makes her look like she has a toupe chucked on top.
We took advise from 3 other hairdressers who said it was the worst they had ever seen..
We went to the lady in question and she said there was nothing wrong with it. There is a huge bald patch on the side of her head about the size of a £5 note as well as the front you can see the cotton and weave as there is no hair covering it.
We asked why she cant see the issue and she said it was my sisters hair fault as its too curly!!!! I asked why she didn't advise that before and she said its not her job to advise only do what she is told!!!?!?!?!
What can we do?
She paid on Credit card so we told them immediately and need to file a dispute
with lots of pictures, other hairdressers opinions etc but we don't feel this is enough.
My sister has taken a day off work to get it done elsewhere, she has just finished chemo so this was supposed to be a treat. The lady charged £200 more than initially told but she was too shocked to refuse to pay as there was only the 2 of them there and weve Dads funeral tomorrow....... She is beyond distraught....

@Ruth. As the retailer, the haidresser should sort this out for you. These are not fit for purpose (Sale of Goods Act) and appear to be in breach of trade descriptions. Report this to your local trading standards office as both the retailer and the manufacturer have let you down.

My daughter got extensions put in her hair, they were meant to be real hair. After a couple of weeks she had to go back due to the hair tangling. The hairdressers tightened the extensions and told her how to wash and dry her hair (extentions). She went back again after a few weeks as her hair was a mess and was told to make an appointment to get them removed. She did this and was told that the hairdressers would send the damaged extentions to the manufacturers "Beauty Works" and see what they would do.
She has received word that since the extentions had not been returned within a month that the company were not willing to test the hair. She has been told to collect the hair ( which another hairdresser had already said was not the real hair) and to take it up with the company instead of the hairdressers.
Is there anything we can do?
Many thanks

I had micro bead hair extensions put in at a salon. While the stylist was trimming up my hair, the extensions were falling out. I called back 3 days later to come back in because over half had come out. I had to phone 4 times before I was finally given an appointment. The extensions were put in a second time. These same extensions were falling out that same day. Within 4 days over 50 pieces were out. I have called the salon repeatedly, daily for a week now. They keep saying they will call me when they can fit me in. I never get a call back. I asked for my money back. I was told no because the extensions were already put in twice. She said she would call with an appointment. That never happened. What should my expectations be with this situation? Please help.

HELP! Has anyone had an experience with a salon where you ask for an inch to be cut off all round and you come out with no hair!! It looks like he has put a pot around my head and just cut the top section right around to my ears. He has thinned every strand of hair out which has left me looking like a poodle with hair flying in every direction! From shulder length hair to this and orange roots as a base. Wrote a letter of complaint and called both of which have been ignored and still no refund what do I do next??! Can I go to press or will I be sued for defamation of character?? This seems dileberate and done out of complete spite...

Iv been in tears most of the night!
My hair iv just about been able to tie back so I can't see it due to a bad hair do!
I wanted a trim & colour, & came home with a cut no better in my opinion than a 5 year old could do & a colour that's no where near what I asked for & was told I could have!!!

My hair is as long as my bra line & had layers about 3" above.

Now I have wonky, heavy, uneven layers up to just below my ear lobe!

The colour it ok, but now where near what I asked for & was told do-able, instead after having the price increased once I sat down, waiting a further 30 minutes for someone to go & get colour, having the colour, I was then told I'd need SEVERAL visits to achieve what I asked for and was told I could have!

I'm so distraught!

I work in the beauty industry & a crap hair do does nothing for my self-esteem!

It's taken me ages to grow out my layers & now it looks like i'm back to square one plus my colour is not as promised!

Total bad hair experience & frightening!!!!

Just been to a salon wanted a full head of highlights and some strands of brown removing. He used bleach and a paddle insted of foils which I thought, well OK he knows best. My hair looks a state it's far too bright and I stated that I didnt want it to bright also he has burnt my scalp at the back of my head and it is pussing. I have left a message asking for him to ring me tomorrow as I want it sorting.
